Randomness of Nothingness
In its 3rd season, OnenessButoh is proud to present Randomness of Nothingness. Conceived and choreographed by Judith Kajiwara, this showcase of new and experimental solo, duet and ensemble works brings light to the inner-visiblity of Butoh and its impact upon one's relationship between Self and the world. In an ever-changing, confusing world, we're becoming more disconnected from our heart-centered natural state of peace and harmony. Kajiwara's full-evening performance strives to merge the audience's personal journeys with the artistry of OnenessButoh. Our work is a unique dance of inner-visibility that decodes the outer world and brings the focus back to our Selves--our healing, empowerment and freedom.
Three personal solos comprise the first half of the showcase: 1) Released!, a Butoh/Haitian-inspired dance performed by Nina Moore (formerly with Blanche Brown's Roots of Haiti) accompanied by Ruth Ichinaga and Kiyono Kishi on Taiko & vocals; 2) Cellar performed by Judith Kajiwara; and 3) The Chair performed by Ruth Ichinaga. The themes of these solos allude to enslavement, grief, innocence, loss and, ultimately, forgiveness.
The second half will expand the scope from personal to collective with the premiere of a new ensemble work, Randomness of Nothingness. This piece is about our imprisonment through mind-control and fear in all facets of our lives. Under the pretext of freedom and human evolution, the advancement of technology is being celebrated. Yet we're unaware of a more disturbing, multi-level agenda that goes far beyond our wildest imagination. Woven together into a stream of dream-like vignettes, the dances offer a surreal look at how we've automatically learned to hide our true selves, blending into the expectations of the society. As life moves more and more toward the absurd, unless we wake up, we'll slowly lose our connection to the essence of who we are, why we are, and what we're here to do. Functioning as apathetic, unemotional, and robotic has become an everyday reality. Survival of the fittest in a fear-based, hostile world has separated and alienated us not only from ourselves but from each other.
