About SPICE!

Some of the most beloved art forms in the world arose out of traumatic events.  Across parts of the Levant, villagers and Bedouins link arms as they march and stomp rhythmically with Dabke, a line dance that goes from being a dance of joy to one that establishes a collective identity in the face of occupation and violence.  With the Transatlantic Slave trade from Africa to the Americas, Africans brought their rhythms and movements along to ease the pain of daily oppression.  Influenced by local Latin traditions, some of those movements evolved into popular dance styles like Samba and Salsa.  When Black slaves in the North American colonies combined West African rhythms and steps with the Irish jig, Tap dancing was born.

What do Dabke, Samba, Salsa, and Tap have in common?  They are dance forms that were shaped or created out of any combination of slavery, exile, and colonization.  We acknowledge the  uncomfortable histories by celebrating the undeniable contributions to our daily human experience, the music and dances we all enjoy so very much.

The goals for this show are :

1) to educate the public about the history of these dance forms
2) to encourage the audience to make connections between pop culture, politics, and history
3) to entertain and inspire people to take classes, attend and produce shows
4)  to grow the international performing arts communities here in Tacoma!

Cuadro Azahares taps Andalucían tradition and cross cultural influences to bring an energetic and living flamenco to contemporary audiences.

Feature Dancer for Cuadro Azahares: Daniela Serrano - La Alfarera

A long time interest in Spanish art and culture combined with a background in competitive figure skating and dance was the foundation for Daniela's initial enthusiasm for flamenco. Nafiah
Everything in the Universe has rhythm, Everything dances
Fourteen years ago Nafiah stumbled onto a bellydance troupe performance at Tacomas Ethnic Fest. Intrigued by the graceful and delicate movements that commanded the audience and their radiating self confidence that she never had, Nafiah knew she had to explore further. It took two and a half years before she made a call and walked into her first class, but it only took moments for her to realize it would be part of her life forever. After several years Nafiah developed a love for Egyptian style and folkloric dances. She began performing to live music and it became her passion. Her dancing has been described as sassy and dancing with soul. She is proud to be raising three daughters as a second generation of bellydancers. Now a multi-award winning dancer she is thankful to be able to study with and dance amongst the PNW finest instructors and dancers. Carol is a multi-award winning belly dance artist based in Tacoma, WA.  As a musician, she fell in love with Middle Eastern music and by extension, became obsessed with raqs sharqi, or what most people know as belly dance. She began her dance journey late 2008 at the Sahara School of Middle Eastern Dance in Washington, DC before moving to her current home base in 2010, Tacoma, WA. Since then, she has studied either privately or through workshops with Tamalyn Dallal, Elisa Gamal, Luna of Cairo, Jillina, and many other well respected artists of the genre.  The dance has even taken her to Egypt where she further studied with some of the pioneers of modern belly dance, such as Raqia Hassan, Randa Kamel, and Dr. Mo Geddawy.

Through the dance, she lives to share the abundant joy she finds in the music and the moment. Her style is soulful and expressive, graceful but energetic, composed yet ecstatic. As a musician herself, she truly shines when given the opportunity to dance to any type of live music whether it's Middle Eastern classics, folkloric, or Egyptian pop.
