Free to Make: How the Maker Movement is Changing Our Schools, Our Jobs, and Our Minds

The creator of the iconic MAKE Magazine and the Maker Faire examines the global Maker Movement and explores how making boosts our ability to learn, to thrive and to work with purpose.

In his new book, Dale Dougherty takes readers on a guided international tour of the Maker Movement, a social revolution that is changing what gets made, how things are made, where things are made, and who gets to make them. With clear language and purpose, Dougherty explains how culture is moving away from passive consumption and instead embracing our freedom to participate. Whether youve visited a Maker Faire, tinker with robotics, embrace 3D printing, make your own clothes, furniture or crafts or simply want to see what all the fuss is about in Maker Culture, youll want to attend this fun and fantastic event.

Dale Dougherty is the founder and CEO of Maker Media, Inc. in Sebastopol, California. Maker Media produces MAKE Magazine, which debuted in 2005, and the Maker Faire, which was first held in the Bay Area in 2006. In 2011, Dougherty was honored at the White House as a Champion of Change through an initiative that honors Americans who are doing extraordinary things in their communities to out-innovate, out-educate and out-build the rest of the world. At the 2014 White House Maker Faire, he was introduced by President Obama as an American Innovator making significant contributions to the fields of education and business.

Kara Platoni is an award-winning science journalist and the author of "We Have the Technology."
