Michele Miller/Catapult Dance
Michele Miller/Catapult Dance will present two new works in this evening of dance. Guest Artist Stephanie Liapis and her company will share the bill. The concert will take place at Broadway Performance Hall, 1625 Broadway, in Seattle's Capitol Hill neighborhood on Friday, September 23, 2016 at 8pm, and Saturday, September 24th at 2pm and 8pm. Catapult Dance will be premiering two new works: "Resistance" and "Things That Must Be Earned". The company has been working on "Resistance" for over two years, having shown it in sections at Boost Dance Festival, The Seattle International Dance Festival and Dance Festival Northwest. This performance marks the first time the piece will be performed in its entirety. Additionally, Catapult will premier a section of a new work, "Things That Must Be Earned", piece exploring the ideas of Trust, Respect and Love, in shorter duets and trios that combined will create a cohesive landscape of human qualities we desire but can not demand from another person. "Resistance" has been brewing for Catapult for over two years now. It was inspired by the Hong Kong uprising of 2014, when protesters massed in four of Hong Kong's busiest areas, effectively restricting the normal operations of the city. Most of the protestors were college and high school students, but after the police attacked the students with tear gas and batons, the city rallied and joined them, occupying key areas of Hong Kong for several months. This event became known as the Umbrella Movement. The Hong Kong government remained silent in response to the demands of the protestors and after months of occupation, the Umbrella Movement simply died out. Resistance and has been inspired by this uprising, but has moved beyond that initial inspiration. In rehearsal, we discussed the ways in which humans use overwhelming force as well as subversive pressure to control each other, to maintain authority and power. We realized how pervasive this situation is in our society, and how complicit we each are in its success. Discussions lead us to the idea that for some people, the walls and boxes we create can be comforting, allowing a sense of freedom by releasing a person from responsibility to interact with someone with different ideas, offering no challenge to the status quo. For others however, this restriction attacks their very core and must be resisted. In this piece we examine both reactions to this force. The choreography is highly athletic, embracing modern technique, partnering and aerial work. The sound score is played live and was created simultaneous to the choreography by company musician, Nico Tower. The set design was created by company carpenter, Heather Coyle. "Things That Must Be Earned" is being created in counterpoint to "Resistance". We were interested in what it is that makes life as humans unique. We looked at the attitudes we value as humans, ways that our interactions with each other are profoundly positive, and are in the process of creating a series of duets and trios that examine the ideals of Trust, Respect, and Love. Catapult Dance is comprised of fourteen artists. Michele Miller is the Artistic Director of the Company, but the company truly functions collaboratively, with the performers taking a highly active role in the choreography. Performers in the Company are: Danica Bito, Becca Blackwell, Linsyanne Owen, Jana Kincl, Kaitlyn Jane Dye, Kate Pope, Kimberly Holloway, Maya Soto and Rebecca Greenfield. Our company musician is Nico Tower, who attends all rehearsals, creating the score for the piece and driving choreographic choices throughout the process. Company carpenter Heather Coyle custom-designs our sets, adding a valuable physical dimension to our work.
