VERSAILLES : LOUIS XIV's MUSICIANS
Tina Chancey ~ viola da gamba and pardessus de viole
Billy Simms ~ theorbo & baroque guitar
  Jeffrey Cohan ~ baroque flute
The remarkable musical atmosphere provided by the celebrated musicians of the court of Louis XIV in Versailles is explored in Versailles: Louis XIV's Musicians.

Begun in 1623 as a hunting lodge by Louis XIII, Versailles became the center of musical activity and political power in France when Louis XIV moved there in 1682. Woodwind instruments were evolving, largely due to the efforts of members of the Philidor family, to suit a more voluptuous conception of sound as is reflected in the vocal airs de cour of the reign of Louis XIII. This, in combination with the elaborate ornamental detail and delicate gestures of this music, yields the deeply moving musical fabric which permeated Louis XIV's daily life.

The program will include one of Louis XIV's favorites, the Grande Piece Royal by Michel-Richard Delalande, and music by other composers associated with the Sun King's court in Versailles: harpsichordists François Couperin and Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre, who was taken into service at the royal court as a brilliant teen, flutists Jacques Hotteterre and Pierre Danican Philidor and viola da gambist Marin Marais. Jeffrey Cohan will play an exact replica, more than two half tones below modern pitch, of an ebony one-keyed flute with massive ivory rings by Hotteterre. Copies of the original editions for all of the music to be performed are from the Library of Congress and the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris.

TRIOS: CLASSICAL TO ROMANTIC
  Risa Browder ~ violin
  John Moran ~ cello
  Jeffrey Cohan ~ 8-keyed flute
This broad sampling of the virtuoso chamber music from the time of Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) will include selections from an unpublished trio arrangement of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Magic Flute from 1795 when Beethoven was 25, music by the blind German virtuoso flutist Friedrich Ludwig Dulon (1769-1826) who impressed Mozart and shared Beethoven's dates almost exactly, the virtuoso French flutist and bassoonist François Devienne (1759-1803), Ignaz Joseph Pleyel (1757-1831), a disciple of Joseph Haydn's whose music was universaly popular in Europe until romanticism became more prevalent, the Viennese flutist Raphael Dressler (1784-1835) who worked with Beethoven, and whose music more thoroughly exhibits characteristics of the new Romantic style. Pleyel and Devienne in particular are performed today on modern instruments, but this music comes to life in a completely new way on period instruments. All works will be performed from original editions obtained from the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, the Library of Congress and the Danish National Museum.

A LITTLE CONSORT OF BACH FOR REILLY
  Risa Browder ~ violin
  John Moran ~ cello
  Billy Simms ~ theorbo
  Jeffrey Cohan ~ 8-keyed flute
A little consort composed of a few of the many musicians who have been privileged to work with J. Reilly Lewis and become his friends offer a intimate program of the chamber music of Johann Sebastian Bach in celebration of Reilly's immeasurable gifts to the community.

The sublime Trio Sonata in G Major, BWV 1038 for flute, violin and basso continuo provided an interesting challenge for J.S. Bach as it shares exactly the same bass line upon which the sonata for violin and continuo, BWV 1021 is built, but with completely different melodic material. Also on the program, Johann Sebastian Bach composed a Trio Sonata for two flutes and continuo, BWV 1039, and later transferred the first flute part to the right hand of the harpsichord while giving the second flute part to a solo viola da gamba, resulting in his Sonata for viola da gamba and obbligato harpsichord in G Major, BWV 1027, performed here with flute assuming the viola da gamba or second flute role, and the violin playing the part assigned to the right hand of the harpsichord or first flute.

The original scoring of several of the works to be performed is not certain, and our instrumentation will be well withing the bounds of what Bach - and Reilly - might have considered appropriate. The sublime sentiments contained in Bach's largest well-known works for chorus, soloists and orchestra with which Reilly was so familiar are crystallized in this chamber music by Bach for but a few instruments; and they are offered to the best of our ability as a tribute to our dear friend and source of inspiration.
