The Auspicious Adventures of an Improbable Princess by Betsy Tobin
Friday, July 8th Outdoors at 8:30 PM at the Trident Cafe, 940 Pearl Street, Boulder.
In this original story, an ordinary woman enters a temple in an exotic land and exits almost unrecognizable. Her transformation continues through a series of everyday events and adventures that catapult her into previously unknown metaphysical realms. This quirky comedy about culture shock and what we gain from exposure to other ways of life incorporates ceremonial aspects of Balinese performances. It also draws inspiration from the fantastic characters and inventive story lines of the great Hindu epic, the Mahabharata.
Director Betsy Tobin weaves a tapestry of stories, multi-layered visual images, and powerful scenes to communicate the rich emotions and insights of life's journeys. She has toured her work across Europe, winning awards and performing in major international festivals. Since founding the Now Or Never Theatre in Boulder, she has created smaller shows like In Search of Giants and Stories of Sticks and Stones, as well as large multi-media productions The Odyssey, microcosm / MACROCOSM, Metaphor, and Shadows & Journeys, toured in canyons and National Parks across the Southwest.
The Auspicious Adventures of an Improbable Princess is performed by Betsy Tobin and Kathryn Moller, a dancer, choreographer and teacher. In recent years, both artists have studied traditional Indonesian shadow puppetry, wayang kulit, in Bali where this story was born. Jesse Manno will perform his musical score inspired by Balinese music.
With humor, interesting twists and turns in the plot, and vivid imagery, the show is for audiences ages 10 and up.
