Danny & The Deep Blue Sea
The year is 1984. Set in a rundown bar in the Bronx, the play tells the story of two of society's rejects, Danny and Roberta, two lost souls whom Shanley himself describes as "violent and battered, inarticulate and yearning to speak, dangerous and vulnerable."
Danny is a brooding, self-loathing young man who resorts more to violence than reason; Roberta is a divorced, guilt-ridden young woman whose troubled teenage son is now being cared for by her parents. Danny, whose fellow truck drivers call him "the animal," seems incapable of tender emotion, while Roberta, who is still haunted by the memory of an ugly sexual incident involving her father, is distrustful of men in general. And yet, as their initial reserve begins to melt, and they decide to spend the night together, they explore the possibility of love - a first for both of them.
We - Nelly Savinon (Roberta) and Alex Ashrafi (Danny) - first met in Lorrel Mannings (Director - Happy New Year) Film/TV acting class at The Barrow Group. Since then, weve worked with each other numerous times and have watched one another grow as actors over the years. Danny and the Deep Blue Sea seemed like the perfect play for us to explore. Each one of these roles is an actors dream, but together, they create the potential for such a unique and explosive theater experience, and youd better bet that with our backgrounds and intertwined experiences as actors, that this production of this classic will be just that.
