Camp Roosevelt-Firebird, an accredited summer residential camp for youth ages 7-15, celebrates its grand opening under new ownership on Sunday, July 10, 2016 with a concert featuring John McCutcheon. Proceeds will go to camp scholarships. You can also purchase tickets at the gate the day of the concert (CASH ONLY): Adults $30, Youth 6-17 $10, Kids 5 and under FREE.
In over 40 years of traveling the US and the globe, John McCutcheon has produced 37 albums and garnered seven Grammy nominations. He is widely known for his virtuosity on nearly a dozen instruments, his masterful, evocative songwriting, and his slyly funny slice-of-life stories. Critics and singers around the globe have hailed his songwriting. Johnny Cash referred to him as "The most impressive instrumentalist I've ever heard and the Washington Post has asserted, "He has an uncanny ability to breathe new life into the familiar. His storytelling has the richness of fine literature." An evening with John McCutcheon will take you from laughter to tears and back, and, finally, to a joyous affirmation of our common humanity.
The celebration starts at 3 pm with an open house, tours, and kids activities, followed by a camp-style outdoor barbecue. The lakeside concert will start at 6:30 pm. Don't miss your chance to see this always entertaining, lively and on-topic musician in the live setting, especially one as beautiful as Camp Roosevelt-Firebird.
Located on the shore of Leesville Lake (a conservation lake in the hills of the Appalachian Plateau), Camp Roosevelt-Firebird provides a wide array of fun and meaningful activities in a caring environment for girls and boys. The Camp fosters self-confidence, leadership, respect, humor, an appreciation of the environment and a desire to make the world a better place.
Running a camp like Roosevelt-Firebird has been a life-long dream of the camp's new owner, Joe Mendes, a public school teacher. Joe and his team have systematically overhauled and updated all the camp's physical structures and systems in order to provide a positive and safe environment for children. The scholarship fund will fulfill Joe's vision of making a high-quality summer camp experience available to any child who wants to attend.
Please consider making a tax-deductible donation today. The American Camping Association, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, accepts donations on our behalf.
