Outsound & KFJC present the 15th Annual Outsound New Music Summit

The 15th annual Summit will take place at the San Francisco Community Music Center, the festivals home for the past 11 years. The schedule includes free hands-on workshops in music improvisation and gear, pre-concert artist talks, and five nights of music featuring a diverse roster of artists.
The concert and event lineup features the annual Touch the Gear expo; community improvisation music workshops with improviser Brandon Evans; and a rare screening of Brandon Evans feature-length documentary film featuring San Francisco free jazz pioneer Sonny Simmons. The five nights of live concerts include the world premiere of a new song cycle by Oakland composer Brett Carson, large ensemble works by Dan Plonsey and Thomas Carnacki; a rare pairing of living legend saxophonist and poet Oliver Lake with Bay Area drum master Donald Robinson, amplified progressive sounds by the Dirty Snacks Ensemble and Inner Ear Brigade, an electro-percussion set by IMA; and a performance of "The Persian Market" by British composer Albert William Ketèlbey, by Big City Orchestra with special guests.
Sunday, July 24, 2pm: Community Improvisation Workshop with Brandon Evans
Presented by saxophonist, composer and improviser Brandon Evans, this open public workshop will explain in depth the structural functions and possibilities inherent in his own music notation system called Ellipsis & Elliptical Axis Systems. Far from academic, this is a family-friendly, all-ages community workshop which seeks to foster new creative approaches to the documentation of musical ideas and their realization as living music. Anyone attending the workshop will receive a free download of the entire catalog of the recorded music of Brandon Evans. $5-15 requested donation.
Sunday, July 24, 7pm: Touch the Gear Expo
Outsound's original public event, Touch the Gear, is a hands-on, family-friendly exposition open to the public. During the evening attendees get to roam among 25-30 musicians and experience sound producing gear, computers, instruments and inventors with their various different configurations of gear everything from oscillators and electronics, to planks of wood with strings attached. All attendees get to ask questions, make sound and experience how the instruments work, in an environment that demystifies technology while inspiring creativity. Free Admission, all ages.
Monday, July 25, 8pm: Sonny Simmons: A Documentary Film by Brandon Evans
A film on the life of the great American master Sonny Simmons, born in 1933. Featuring extended interviews with Simmons himself, Anthony Braxton, and Juni Booth, plus great rare footage of Sonny Simmons playing alto saxophone and English Horn in studio sessions and private rehearsals. Directed by Brandon Evans. Originally released in 2003, this will be the San Francisco screening debut. $8-15 requested donation.
Tuesday, July 26, Q&A Q&A 7:30pm Music 8:15pm: Multi-instrumentalist composer Dan Plonsey Ensemble debut On His Shoulders Stands Nothing, a recently-discovered melody excavated from some of his old music notebooks, divided into 196 overlapping 4-bar loops. Pianist composer Brett Carson will also perform Mysterious Descent, a mytho-dramatic song cycle based on the extant texts of the Idnat Ikh-ôhintsôsh structured in 12 movements intersecting with poetry and theatre. Tickets are $15 General, $12 Student/Senior.
Wednesday, July 27, Q&A 7:30pm Music 8:15pm: Music exploring the fields of energy in music:
In a reprisal of their recording with the late legendary Marco Eneidi "Hell-Bent in the Pacific" leading multi-instrumentalist Vinny Golia is joined by powerhouse bassist Lisa Mezzacappa and drummer Vijay Anderson for a set of freewheeling improvisation.
Opening will be Thomas Carnacki, a Bay Area-based collective performance group under the recording persona of sound designer Gregory Scharpen. Carnacki recordings and shows tend towards the textural, subtle, and disquieting, and have been featured in dance and theatrical productions, HBO and PBS documentaries, experimental short films, and festivals such as the Whitney Biennial.Tickets are $15 General, $12 Student/Senior.
Thursday, July 28, Q&A 7:30pm Music 8:15pm: Living legend, saxophonist, composer, and poet Oliver Lake performs with renowned Bay Area drummer Donald Robinson. From collaborations with the Brooklyn Philharmonic, Flux String Quartet, Bjork, Lou Reed, A Tribe Called Quest, Mos Def, and Meshell Ndegeocello, to his co-founding of the Black Artist Group (BAG) and the highly-acclaimed World Saxophone Quartet; creation of his non-profit Passin Thru organization, becoming a mainstay with Pittsburghs City of Asylum, publishing two books of poetry and frequently having original artwork displayed in exhibitions across the country, Oliver Lake views it all as part of the same whole.
Opening will be composer/multi-instrumentalist Brandon Evans who has performed and recorded extensively with Anthony Braxton, Sonny Simmons, Taylor Ho Bynum, and many others in a trio with stellar Bay Area musicians percussionist Mark Pino and violinist/singer Christina Stanley.

Friday, July 29, Q&A 7:30pm Music 8:15pm: A night of Avant-Pop with two performances by cutting edge melody makers Mark Cliffords Dirty Snacks Ensemble and Bill Wolters Inner Ear Brigade featuring a mix of progressive rock, electronic jazz, and experimental pop.
Tickets are $15 General, $12 Student/Senior.
Saturday, July 30, Q&A 7:30pm Music 8:15pm: Big City Orchestra will present a unique version of "The Persian Market" by British composer Albert William Ketèlbey, written in 1920 and inspired by Johann Strauss II's composition "Persischer Marschof," which was very popular with theater orchestras and in sheet music form in its day. Also performing will be IMA, the electro-percussion duo of Amma Ateria and Nava Dunkelman, exploring distortions of time and handling of the moment through restraint and release. Tickets are $15 General, $12 Student/Senior.
