Braiding Wisdom Series: Enriching the Earth/An Eco-spiritual approach to aging, illness, death and grief
Inspired by Wendell Berry's poem of the same name, this interactive workshop explores how befriending our eventual and inevitable death can positively influence what is happening in our world beyond our own physical body and those we are closest to as far as inner circle. By engaging in experiential exercises and reflecting on creative works by Berry and other poets, naturalist, and artists, participants will also consider how grief, if cultivated as a sacred skill, can nourish not only our own lives, but many generations to come.
Karen Reppen has been passionately learning and teaching about aging, illness, death and grief for nearly 15 years. As a hospice communications professional she focused on increasing awareness about end-of-life care through outreach to patients, families, health-care providers and the public.
She is currently working with a group of volunteers and professionals to establish a social model hospice to serve people experiencing homelessness, mental/emotional illness, and otherwise marginalized populations in the Madison area. She has completed the "Being with Dying" program at Upaya Institute, earned a Grief Support Specialist Certificate through UW-Madison Continuing Studies, is a student of Stephen Jenkinson's Orphan Wisdom School and is a mixed-media artist, and mindfulness practitioner.
