Ohana Summer Workshop #2 Medicinal Weeds
"We are focusing mostly on plants that are common, non-native weeds that are generally prolific and unwanted where they are growing.
For each plant we will talk about 3 different aspects, identification, medicinal or nutritional properties, and how to prepare and use the plant. We'll talk about some basic botany and anatomay of plants so you can identify the 10 plants we will focus on, there will also be some information here that will help you use a plant identification book so you can identify the plants we don't talk about and can use the book how to identify it.
We will go over the significant nutrients and compounds that the example plants contain and talk about what they do in the human body and also in the plant. Then we will talk about the 10 example plants, how to harvest and use the plant as medicine or food.
It's really surprising how useful these "weeds" are! I think there will be a lot of new information here that people cannot find in books and being able to see and touch the plant examples will help us all learn a lot in a short amount of time.
We'll go on a tour for a half hour to give a quick introduction of Ohana and the 10 example plants, and survey where we might find our example plants. Then we'll gather together and talk about plant identification and how to harvest the plants for a half hour. Then we'll send the people out to harvest the example plants and bring them back to the group. Lastly we'll talk about the medicinal and nutritional properties and show them how to make an herbal tonic and other ways to use the plants.
The example plants will be shepherd's purse, purslane, lamb's quarter, curly dock, plantain, amaranth, mallow, dandelion, mullein, clover."- Mike S.
This Workshop is $40 per person and the same price if you bring the whole family!
