Harlem Comedy Festival
Harlem has been an entertainment, arts, and culture hub for over one hundred years theres never been and up until this point wasnt in existence a comedy festival celebrating the impact Harlem New York has had on the comedy world. There are currently twelve comedy festivals of all sorts happening all year long in the five boroughs of New York City and this is the only one taking place in the historic neighborhood of Harlem New York. Most comedy festivals focus on one aspect of comedy. Whether that be sketch, improv, stand up, short film/web series, or podcasts. The Harlem Comedy festival will be a majority stand up showcase, and competition, but will also highlight Improv performers of color in NYC, and have a film series each day of the festival during the afternoon. Showing documentary films about African American's contributions to comedy. There is a severe lack of diversity in the comedic Improv community and the television and film industry. It has been a heavily discussed issue in regards to Saturday Night Live, #grammysowhite, and, the Upright Citizens Brigade, the preeminent talent pool for the comedy industry today. We will bring comedic improv performers of color to Harlem to perform. And hopefully shine a light on the talent that exists already in order to inspire others to develop those same skills. Unlike a majority of comedy festivals the Harlem comedy festival falls into two categories both competition and showcase. While most competitions are single elimination tournaments where one comedian moves on each round and at most performs twice. The Harlem Comedy festival will have all fifteen competitors perform at least three times. We do this by having three rounds of five comedians doing six minute sets and the other ten comedians doing rapid fire two minute sets. The three winners of those respective competitions will perform a fourth time. The first place winner of that competition will win a fifth performance as host of the Improv showcase on the closing night of the festival.
