THE TWO-CHARACTER PLAY
Tennessee Williams worked for ten years on this play, his final, major elegy for his family, his final, bold testament to the power of theatre.  THE TWO-CHARACTER PLAY is a late, mature echo on the same themes of family and survival reflected in his first hit, THE GLASS MENAGERIE.
In THE TWO-CHARACTER PLAY, two actors, Felice and Clare, brother and sister, are on a theatrical tour.  They've been abandoned by their company, who've called them "insane," in an old theatre.  Now they have to put on a play to make enough money to get out of town.
The play they perform is one Felice has written - "The Two-Character Play" - a story of a brother and sister who have been labelled "insane" by the people in their small Southern town.  They are trapped in a crumbling family mansion, where their father shot their mother, and then himself.  Now they are trying to figure out a way to get the forfeited insurance money for their parents' death due to suicide, so they can find a way to leave the mansion and live.
Naturally, or unnaturally, reality and theatre intersects, twists, turns, and punishes.
THE TWO-CHARACTER PLAY contains all of the power and passion of Williams' best work, now with the influence of some of his later contemporary fellow playwrights - Samuel Beckett, Harold Pinter, Eugene Ionesco.  So it also contains fascinating abstractions coloring Williams' earthy poetry.
The show is coming direct from Tennessee Williams Festival St. Louis, and will be playing in the intimate confines of Winter Opera St. Louis on The Hill.  The proximity of the actors will provide the audience with an unforgettable experience with this incredible play.
Michelle Hand and Joe Hanrahan portray Clare and Felice.  Sarah Whitney directs.
