Jim Cooper - Vibraphonist A warm vibist who goes for the heart, is how Jazz Times Magazine described award winning vibraphonist and composer Jim Cooper. Jim recently won the Critic's Choice Award for his song Third Circle at the 2015 ArtPrize competition in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He won a Jammie Award in 2014 for his sideman work on Dirty Fingers, A Tribute to John Patton, with organist Jim Alfredson and was also nominated for 4 Jammie Awards in 2008 for his recording Trio Musik featuring The Cooper, Hay, Van Lente Group.
Growing up in Chicago, Jim was influenced by rock, blues, classical and jazz groups that performed in that great city. Coming from a drum and piano background, he started playing vibes in 1972 while a student at Michigan State University. The 1980s was a fruitful time for Cooper, performing with Buddy Richs pianist/composer Bob Dogan. They performed at all the top Chicago jazz clubs as well as the No Exit Café in Rogers Park, which became a training ground for dedicated jazz musicians....visit www.cyclingsalamander.com for more information.
