Larry Crumpler, Ph.D. Research Scientist, NMMNHS
A new Mars update. The mission just keeps getting better and better, and it is always standing-room only in the DynaTheater when Dr. Crumpler talks about the latest mission results. Opportunity Rover has been exploring Mars for over 12 years and recently completed a marathon distance of 26 miles (42 km). It is now the record holder for driving distance on another planet or moon. Even more amazing is the fact that real geological field work is being accomplished right here at our Museum on another planet through the eyes of the rovers cameras. Dr. Larry Crumpler is Research Curator of Volcanology and Space Science at the NMMNHS. He is a scientist on the NASA Mars Exploration Rover Mission, served on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter mission, and is Co-I on an instrument proposal for the 2020 rover. He continues to serve as long-term planning lead (LTP) for the daily telecons that define the ongoing activities of the Opportunity Rover, and to have a great time being a field geologist on Mars. He earned his M.S. in Geology from UNM, Ph.D. in Planetary Science from the University of Arizona, and is a Fellow of the Geological Society of America. The New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science reserves the right to cancel any event that does not reach a minimum of 6 participants.
Tickets may be purchased at the NMMNH&S's Online lecture ticket sales stop Noon the day of the lecture. The day of the lecture if seats are available they will be sold at the door as a first come first server basis. Doors open at 6:15pm.
