Tolerance is like a Pebble in Your Shoe with Ednita Wright, P.h.D.
This workshop will begin the conversation about moving from tolerance to inclusion by focusing on: The stages of inclusion Assessing inclusiveness for both individual and institution Initial actions of commitment to inclusion Barriers to inclusiveness.
Creating environments that foster inclusion is not easy. In fact, it is much more taxing than just defining those different from ourselves as OTHER.
Culture is the amalgamation of behavioral patterns, concepts, values, and rituals reinforced within a community, organization or family. Culture embodies basic assumptions and beliefs positive and negative shared by everyone but often left unspoken. Culture, is taken for granted, it is just the way we do things.
Inclusion means that we are ready to embrace, not tolerate, the differences we have in our communities and that we are willing to do the work necessary to enhance our cultural competence.
The current institutional/organizational culture can pose significant challenges to the ability to implement change. Understanding the organizations culture and readiness for change provides a perspective that is necessary if the organization is to move forward with inclusive change. Institutional cultures often change slowly; it can take much longer than we would like for attitudes to shift and for us to embrace new ways of doing our work.
The fundamental question for any organization/institution is: are we ready to change, which means are we ready to work on our biases individually and collectively? The process of change, particularly for an organization/institution, must begin with clarity about fundamental value/belief/practice that needs to be changed, for both the individual and the group. The other elements required for the change process to be successful are To be clear about the expected outcome of the change being proposed To initiate a trial phase for the change, with specific time limits To decide on a method to evaluate whether the change has worked, and most importantly, To determine what are the consequences for individuals or groups that remain unwilling to embrace the change.
