Songwriter Swap - Justin Evan Thompson, Meredith Wilder, Cali Shaw, Alex Meryol, and Gabrielle Louise
THE NEW MEXICO SONG SWAP: FIVE SOUTHWESTERN SONGWRITERS IN CONCERT AT ART OF THE SONG COFFEEHOUSE SUNDAY, MAY 15th
May, 2016 (Albuquerque, NM): Four outstanding Albuquerque composers, Justin Evan Thompson, Meredith Wilder, Alex Maryol, and Cali Shaw, will perform a collaborative concert in tandem with Gabrielle Louise, a Boulder based songwriter, in a unique format called In the Round. The presentation will consist of two hour long sets, the first in which each artist will take a turn sharing his or her own material, and the second in which everyone will take a turn performing and interpreting one anothers compositions.
Presented in tandem with Art of the Song creativity radio, a one-hour, independently-produced radio show exploring inspiration and creativity, the New Mexico Song Swap will take place on Sunday, May 15th at Art of the Song Coffeehouse (Sol Acting Academy Performance Space) at 5500 San Mateo Blvd NE, #107. Tickets are $15 in advance through Brown Paper Tickets, and $20 at the door. Doors are at 7:00pm, concert at 7:30.
Gabrielle Louise is a nationally touring troubadour noted for her poignant lyrics and lush voice. The daughter of two vagabond musicians, Gabrielle inherited the genetic predisposition to wanderlust and song. She is an honest, engaging performer who leaves you with the feeling that hope and heartache are two sides of the same coin. She is at one moment folkie and ethereal, the next moment a smoky jazz chanteuse. Music critic David McGee (writer for Rolling Stone and Deep Roots Magazine) says of her music: Articulate and giftedLouise dives deep into her songs, exploring them in a warm, sturdy voice reminiscent at times of Joni Mitchell, especially in the falsetto flights and lower register swoops. She executes a captivating balance of heartache and resolve."
Justin Evan Thompson is a songwriter and performer from Albuquerque, New Mexico with an affinity for traditional folk music and the acoustic guitar. His persona and lyrics are as poetic as they are rough around the edges, and both lend themselves to honest and energetic performances. With an instinctive knack for melody and prose, Justin's songs are as singable as they are poignant.Matthew Finch, Music director at KUNM really nailed it on the head when he called Justins music Burley Americana, and the Weekly Alabi wrote that Thompson displays a poetic and knowing take on folk music that can be rousing as well as introspective and compelling.
Meredith Wilder, or Songbird of the Sandias, is front woman of the popular Albuquerque folk band Wildewood. Its an appropriate moniker, given the appealing sweetness in Wilders voice, the transparency of her head tones, and her irresistible melodies. But there is also a dusky darkness and a wary vulnerability in both voice and lyrics that balance the sweetness and draw you deeper into her compositions. Music critic Mel Minter asks, could Wilder be the love child of Loretta Lynn and Leonard Cohen? Her songs have some of Lynns country heartache and grit, and like Cohen, shes befriended desperation, having recognized it as a fellow traveler in the human condition.
The son of Greek-American restaurateurs, Alex Maryol grew up in Santa Fe, New Mexico and was raised on the music of Chuck Berry, Fats Domino and Elvis Presley. He began songwriting during his teenage years while performing at smoky bars and coffee shops in downtown Santa Fe. While primarily influenced by blues greats such as Lightning Hopkins and Buddy Guy Alex maintained a love for all musical genres from classical to grunge. In his early twenties Alex gained notoriety by performing at festival favorites such as the Telluride Blues and Brews Festival and the King Biscuit Blues Festival. Alexs guitar work will simply stun you. KBAC radio seems to agree, as theyve called him a fine young talent, who never fails to electrify the crowd."
Cali Shaw consistently pushes the americana-folk-rock envelope beyond its traditional realms. His eclectic cross-genre conception is perfectly displayed on his new album, Under The Olive Tree. On it, Shaw continues his unique vision of modern acoustic music by employing instruments not normally associated with folk and making them seem perfectly at home and in proper context within the boundaries of his songs. He creates a sound thats at times as lush and orchestrated as it is foot-stomping and raw; all of which only serve to showcase the strength of his songwriting. No Depression magazine printed that Shaws musical tapestry goes far beyond the usual forlorn ramblings borne by even the most fanciful troubadour. His songs are richly arranged and constructed.
