Join us as we celebrate the birthday of one of the most well known, loved, and respected fiddle players in today's American roots music community, Liz Sloan. Known around the world as a full time touring member of; Bob Wayne and his Outlaw Carnies, Filthy Still, and Jayke Orvis and the Broken Band, Liz has teamed up with her long time band mate, and now fiance, Jared McGovern as The urban Pioneers.
The Urban Pioneers started out in Pittsburgh, PA in the Fall of 2013. Jared and Liz were playing with Jayke Orvis and the Broken Band and Jared had a bass built for him in Florida so they needed a plan to go pick it up. The Coney Island Roadshow was passing from Pittsburgh down to Florida so Jared and Liz wrote and recorded some songs, named themselves the Urban Pioneers, and toured themselves to Florida to pick up the bass.
Liz grew up in the small town of Breckenridge, Tx where she began playing violin at 3 years old. She went to college to college playing violin and got burnt out on it. She wanted to play more country music and played with Bob Wayne, Jayke Orvis, Filthy Still, and many others. Now she tours all over the world shredding her fiddle with the Urban Pioneers.
Jared lived all over the south growing up and claims Chattanooga,TN as his hometown. He joined the Navy at 18 and began playing music shortly after his enlistment was up. He cut his teeth playing upright bass with Bob Wayne, Jayke Orvis, Wayne Hancock, and many others. He decided to learn to play banjo one day though, and hasn't stopped since.
Gallows Bound is a six piece Appalachian folk-punk/bluegrass outfit from Winchester, Virginia. Being raised in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains and stemming from three chord punk rock provides for a unique twist on traditional instruments. With their first album "Empty Flask, Empty Heart", the songs are described as an "aggressive yet melodic collection" ranging from fast and punchy tales of rambling and love, to dark and soulful songs birthed from whiskey and regret.
"Their live set is performed as impeccably as their studio set, and you really can feel how much energy, love, and emotion is poured not only into their writing, but into their performance.
