Program: Robert Schumann, Drei Fantasientücke Op.23 Francis Poulenc, Sonata Karlheinz Stockhausen, Tierkreis: Aries and Taurus Reiko Füting, leaving without/palimpsest Jason Eckardt, Rendition Devon Tipp, Burlesque
Robert Schumann is one of the most acclaimed romantic composers, and his Drei Fantasientücke Op.23 (Three Fantasies), composed in 1849, shows the fantasy and the sudden mood changes, the signature of so much of Schumanns music.
Sonata for Clarinet and piano (1962) by Francis Poulenc, one of the last pieces completed by the composer, combines moments of high energy with ones of longing. This piece was dedicated to Arthur Honneger, an old friend of Poulencs.
Karlheinz Stockhausens Tierkreis (Zodiac) was composed between 1974-75, and consists of twelve melodies, each one representing one sign of the zodiac. Originally written for music boxes, Tierkreis has been arranged by the composer for other formations, including an open instrumentation. In this concert we will perform Aries and Taurus.
Based on a previous composition for piano (leaving without) and the German folk tune "Gesegn dich Laub, gesegn dich Gras, Reiko Fütings leaving without/palimpsest shows the piano as a soloist and the clarinet as a sonic addition to that part.
By Jason Eckardt, we will present Rendition, exploring the word rend, as from the mid-90s CIA decision to implement a program of extraordinary rendition. Eckardt writes, The etymology of extraordinary rendition can perhaps be traced to the meaning of the verb rend: to tear, to remove from a place by violence, to wrest. Other meanings include to tear (the hair or clothing) as a sign of anger, grief, or despair, to lacerate with painful feelings, and to pierce with sound.
Devon Tipps Burlesque is a manic five part rondo where the clarinetist plays the part of buffoon, harlequin, romantic, and madman in this over caffeinated Ivesian character piece.
