Grounds for Play - Design & Use of Outdoor Environments to Support Early Childhood Education
NOTE: The workshop has filled, but if you'd like to be on a waitlist please contact laura@trails.org and we can notify you in case of cancellations.

The Environment is the Third Teacher
There are three teachers of children:  adults, other children, and their physical environment. --Loris Malaguzzi, Reggio Emilia

PLAYING IS LEARNING!
Well-designed outdoor spaces make a tremendous difference!  They support the many ways children play and learn, yet most schools are designed with the assumption that education only happens in the classroom.

The workshop will bring EC educators together with school ground designers to elevate professional understanding of the design principles and developmental needs that shape effective outdoor learning and play spaces, as well as how schools can make great use of them to benefit childrens physical, emotional, social, and creative growth.  We will also share compelling current research findings on play environments.  Recent examples of design both local and international will be shared.

Workshop includes a fabulous lunch and tours of the grounds at Longfellow and The Children's Center.

Presenters:
Sashie Misner, Landscape Architect, Mitchell & Associates
Amy Segal, Landscape Architect, Terrence J. DeWan & Associates
Workshop Facilitator:  Laura Newman, School Ground Greening Coordinator, School Ground Greening Coalition/Portland Trails

Get $tarted:  Workshop attendees will be eligible to apply for a seed grant to launch their school ground project thanks to a small fund via Maine Roads To Quality.  Interested schools should send multiple staff members if possible.

This event is sponsored through a collaboration between The School Ground Greening Coalition, Maine Roads to Quality Professional Development Network at USM & The Childrens Center in Portland,  and made possible in part thanks to a grant from the Margaret Burnham Trust.
