Bemidji Symphony Orchestra presents concert "Of Remembrance and Romance."
The concluding concert of the Bemidji Symphony Orchestras 77th season "Passionate Journeys" will be "Of Remembrance and Romance" on Sunday, May 1, 2016 at 3:00 pm at the Bemidji High School Auditorium. Dr. Beverly Everett conducts.
Guest artist Wesley Baldwin, cellist, is welcomed back to the BSO stage to perform Alan Schulman's Concerto for Cello and Orchestra as well as Max Bruch's "Kol Nidrei." Also on the program are Howard Hansons Symphony No. 2 "Romantic," and the Overture to "Candide" by Leonard Bernstein.
Dr. Baldwin lives in Knoxville, TN and performs throughout the United States and Europe as soloist and chamber musician. He is an advocate for great music from all eras and is one of the only performers of several little known and new concerti for cello, including those by Wagenseil, Jacob T.V., Behzad Ranjbaran, and Alan Shulman. His recording of music for cello by Alan Shulman, released by Albany records in 2010, enjoyed widespread critical acclaim.
As a member and principal cellist of the New World Symphony, Baldwin performed with many of the worlds great conductors and toured Japan, Scotland, England, Argentina, and Brazil. He has performed chamber music at the Aspen, Cazenovia, Hot Springs, Ojai, Sandpoint, Mainly Mozart, May in Miami, Skaneateles, and Sub-tropics Music Festivals, and internationally in Italy, France, Monte Carlo, Spain, Austria, Brazil, Argentina, the United Kingdom and Costa Rica. In the summers he performs and teaches at the Michigan City Chamber Music Festival, the ARIA International Academy, and at the Wintergreen Festival.
A passionate teacher, Baldwin serves as Professor in the School of Music at the University of Tennessee. Since 2004 he has been the conductor of the Knoxville Youth Chamber Orchestra, an educational role he relishes. He also currently serves as President of the Tennessee State chapter of the American String Teachers Association. Baldwin founded and directs the Tennessee Cello Workshop, an annual three-day gathering of more than 150 cellists of all ages from throughout the United States held each February.
This concert made possible through funding from the George W. Neilson Foundation. The BSOs concert season, "Passionate Journeys," is supported, in part, by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts.
