Port Hadlock, WA
Share this event:

Join the Jefferson County Marine Resources Committee and WA Department of Fish and Wildlife biologists Camille Speck and Doug Rogers on May 7th at Oak Bay County Park, 301 Portage Way, Port Hadlock at 9:45 am to learn all about harvesting clams on local beaches.  Register on-line, then bring the family and find out more about different types of clams, where to find them, how to harvest safely and sustainably, and the basic rules and regulations that assure delicious clams this summer and into the future. Co-sponsored by WSU Jefferson County Extension.

Registration is free, but you must register at http://clamming.brownpapertickets.com . You will need a shellfish license, bucket or net bag, boots and digging tools for the event. Details will be sent to all registrants. WDFW Shellfish Licenses can be purchased on-line at https://www.fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov or one of the following retail outlets:  Port Ludlow Marina, Olympic Equipment Rentals in Port Hadlock, Port Townsend Fuel Dock, Brinnon General Store, or Quimper Mercantile, Henery Hardware, or Sea Marine in Port Townsend.  Children 14 and under do not need a license.

This is the third year the MRC and WSU Extension are offering this very popular program. Betsy Carlson, a previous participant said,  Ive lived here for 20 years and have always wanted to go clamming. Now I have my license and know how to do it right.  The program is co-sponsored by WSU Extension, WA Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the Jefferson County Marine Resources Committee (MRC) with support from the US Environmental Protection Agency, Puget Sound Partnership and the Northwest Straits Commission.  Cheryl Lowe, Jefferson MRC Coordinator, explains, Digging clams is a lot of fun and great for families to do together. We want people to learn how to do it sustainably and to understand the direct connection between clean water and shellfish safety.

This public event is free.  A $10 donation per family will help support future marine education programs.  Register early. Space is limited. For more information, go to http://jeffersonmrc.org.
