One Of Us!- Bouffon
Ten Directions and Byrd Productions Physical Theater Present:
One Of Us! An experiential introduction to bouffon. Lead by Audrey Crabtree
Enter into the world of the Bouffon. Feeling playful? Snarky? Have a bone to pick? Translate your observations and frustration with society, systems, and stereotypes into physical dynamic theater work. Through games and exercises and play you will develop a unique core character from the inside out. Working in packs you will practice the skills, tools and tactics of the bouffon. Come to birth a new character or deepen an existing bouffon. This class is most fun when filled with artists from different disciplines; writers, musicians, visual artists, dancers, acrobats, improvisers and theater people! Be prepared to move, work hard, play hard, and become ONE OF US!

Bouffon mythology from Audrey:
Cursed with the misfortune of a grotesque appearance, and compulsion to push the limits of decency and morality, you are deemed less than human. You are beaten and driven from your home. Outside of the village, you band together with other bouffon creating your own bizarre community. Forever tormented by the rejection, you are obsessed with the society from which you were unjustly cast, and spend your time observing the villagers, their hypocrisy, and personal private vices. Once a year, foolishly, the villagers invite you and your friends back to the village for a festival, so they can secretly mock and ridicule your physical imperfections. Seeing the perfect opportunity to enact your revenge, you all offer to bring a show. Reveling in the perverse attention and using wit, parody and charm then you and your tribe devise the most cunning and clever ways of slipping seeds of doubt, guilt and truth under the skin of the villagers, in hopes it will resurface later to destroy their precious society.
Audrey Crabtree spent the past 18 years based in NYC and working internationally in physical theater, performance art and circus as a performer, director, writer and teacher/coach. Her collaborative work has won a Drama Desk Award and NY Innovative Theatre Award. Mz Crabtree's work focuses on audience engagement, physical expression and stories that stir the pot. She has worked Big Apple Circus, Cirque du Soleil, toured with Clowns Without Borders, and whenever possible she teaches and performs in beautiful places such as the Dominican Republic, India, Mexico, Ireland, Australia, Canada and Colombia.
