------

In this concert, we play with repetition in music and explore its roles and meanings in our lives. You might say this is a concert about the human condition, expressed through a variety of awarenesses about repetition. This is a concert about noticing something obvious.

Our lives and our world are grounded in repetition: our hearts beat, we inhale and exhale, the sun rises and sets, the moon moves through its phases, we experience the turn of seasons and the passing of years.

Without repetition, there would be no recognition.

Without repetition, there would be no rest.

Without repetition, there would be no evolution.

Without repetition, we would not have the deep pleasure of anticipation, whether it be the anticipation of an insanely catchy hook in a song, or the first signs of spring arriving.

Researcher Elizabeth Hellmuth Margulis conducted an experiment using excerpts of atonal 20th century music by highly-esteemed composers. Using a computer program, she randomly copied and inserted bits of the music to create alternate versions of these excerpts that now included repeated sections. She asked people to listen and respond to both versions. They reliably expressed a strong preference for the versions with repetition, in spite of the artlessness of the computerized process. They also experienced them as more likely to have been written by a human than created by a computer.

Poet Mary Oliver wrote, "Rhythm is one of the most powerful of pleasures. When it becomes reliable, we are in a kind of body-heaven."

People berate themselves: I knew that! Why do I have to re-learn this lesson over and over? Forgetting and remembering is a basic cycle. Relapse is a part of change. Failure is a part of the path of growth. People get stuck and get un-stuck.

We intend this concert to be a fun, intriguing, entertaining, and thought-provoking program of song and improvisation. Please join us.
