GottaGetGon Folk Festival 2016
Saratoga County Fairgrounds
Ballston Spa, NY
Share this event:

The GottaGetGon is a friendly little folk festival put on by volunteers every Memorial Day Weekend since 1970. It welcomes adults, teens, and children to enjoy a weekend sharing music, time, and friendship.

The festival starts Friday evening with a NEW FOLKS SHOWCASE at 8 PM. This year's New Folks are:
- THE YOUNG NOVELISTS - Beautiful harmonies on songs culled from their small-town roots in rural Canada. They are the winners of the 2015 Canadian Folk Music Award for New/Emerging Artist of the Year
- 5 MILE STRING BAND - A rockin' old-time string band from Brooklyn with an infectious sound and irresistible energy.
- MAX HATT / EDDA GLASS - Jazz-Americana duo from New Mexico that is "subtly poignant, elegantly funky, and haunting without trying to be." (Nels Cline, Wilco)

Our HEADLINERS will offer formal concerts, workshops, and plenty of casual jamming on the campgrounds throughout the festival. See our website (http://www.pickingandsinging.org/web2011/GGG.html) for schedule details:

ATWATER-DONNELLY
This highly praised husband-wife duo from Rhode Island is well known to fans of traditional music throughout the U.S. and Europe. They blend appealing vocals with an astounding array of instruments including the mountain dulcimer, old-time banjo, tin whistle, guitar, mandolin, harmonica, limberjacks, feet and more. Their repertoire includes traditional American and Celtic folk songs, a capella pieces, old-time gospel songs, dance tunes, and original works. They have researched traditional folk music and dance in Appalachia, the Ozarks, New England, Ireland, England and Prince Edward Island and are well known to fans of traditional folk music in the U.S. and Europe for their wonderful performances and engaging workshops.

CHARLIE PARR
"Parr is a folk artist for the new American Dust Bowl, a resonator-ready troubadour armed with a well-worn satchel of troubled tales that cut to the heart of a nation mired in fear and in dire need of a roots-music revival."  ACOUSTIC GUITAR MAGAZINE  Minnesota's Charlie Parr is blistering finger-picker who switches between acoustic guitar, dobro and banjo. His keening, cut-through-the-crowd vocals resonate with a conviction that runs deep and true. It's the music of a self-taught guitarist and banjo player who grew up with his dad's recordings of America's musical founding fathers, including Charley Patton and Lightnin' Hopkins, Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly. His heartfelt and plaintive original folk blues and traditional spirituals are rooted in a humble upbringing as the son of two proud union meatpackers. He has thirteen albums to his name and plays more than 250 shows a year world-wide.

BEN MILLER & ANITA MACDONALD QUARTET
This first-rate Celtic quartet combines the fiery sound of the Scottish Border pipes (Ben) with rich Cape Breton fiddle (Anita), accompanied by Tyson Chen on Cape Breton-style piano and PEI guitarist and fiddler Zakk Cormier. Following a stint in the internationally acclaimed Scotia-Glenville Pipe Band, band leader and Queensbury, NY native Ben Miller pursued his lifelong love of the pipes all the way to the University of Edinburgh, where he completed a post-grad degree at their School of Scottish studies. Anita MacDonald adds the fiddle tunes and Gaelic songs of her native Cape Breton to the band's repertoire.

HEATHER PIERSON TRIO
At the seat of a piano or brandishing an acoustic guitar, tenor banjo, or melodica, Heather Pierson transforms from a quiet, serious figure into a world-class performer, opening her heart in a manner that leaves her listeners hungering for more. Her live performances move seamlessly from New Orleans jazz and blues to rousing Americana and poignant, original ballads. She's accompanied by Shawn Nadeau on upright bass and the GottaGetGon's own Davy Sturtevant on guitar, mandolin, dobro, fiddle and cornet, giving this ensemble a dynamic range that is truly impressive.
