"Seattle"
directed and written by Adrian Vázquez / Los Tristes Tigres (México)
created by Adrian Vázquez, Nancy López Luna and Elia Mrak
performed by Nancy López Luna and Elia Mrak
light design by Adrian Vázquez / Los Tristes Tigres
process assisted by Kenia Delgadillo

Dreamlike and moving, "Seattle" is a physical theater play that tells the story of two individual lives. Their intertwined destiny intends to unite them through dance, sports, music, and different historical events.  But life has a rebellious spirit that toys with their journeys, tosses them to and fro, and keeps pushing back their inevitable encounter.

"Seattle" is a story of encounters, intersections, and near misses, both intimate, and familiar.  It is at the same time personal, sincere, and powerful; it tells the dramatic through a smile.

Constructed using various theatrical elements, "Seattle" uses precise physicality and colorful text to tell the story of a couple that was destined to meet.  This play confronts the rawness and cruelty of life, but also the possibility to transform these dark realities through the vitality of two people.

***************

We are Elia Mrak (USA) and Nancy López Luna (MEX).

We are performers who come from different backgrounds, cultures, and dance styles.  Soon after meeting in 2014 we recognized that we share a unique talent to be successful dancers in the dance-specific art world, while also building a bridge from dance to everyday people in the form of workshops and movement research. Our mission is to combine our artistic and community work, using the body as a medium for empowerment and change; it is how we participate in the world.

We have worked together in Mexico, USA and Europe, and are currently internationally touring our first evening-length duet, Whimsical.  Individually, we have performed with international choreographer/master David Zambrano, been a finalist on the national television program "Opera Prima" (imagine "So You Think You Can Dance?" of Mexico), won "Best Female Dancer" in Mexico in 2014, taught at Mark Morris Dance Center and Cornish College of the Arts, one of 50 recipients of the Watson Fellowship nationwide, and multiple year-long fellowships from the Mexican government, FONCA. In 2015, we were the only recipients from the Western Hemisphere for the ACASA Residency in Sicily, Italy to teach and direct a new performance, Walkabout.

Seattle began in late 2014 when we connected with Adrián Vásquez in Mexico City, after seeing his powerfully raw solo performance, El Hijo de Mi Padre - which he also wrote and directed - based on his childhood in the streets of Tijuana.

We all met again in Mexico City in 2015, surrounded by a surge in violence, and the murder of people known to Nancy and Adrián.  We were affected by those events and met at his house to discuss how those emotions and thoughts could be transformed into a performance.

Together, we have created Seattle.  Our first performance will be in late April in Xalapa, Mexico.  And we are proud to offer our piece in Seattle WA.

Each performance will be accompanied by an after-show talk about the production process, and artistic creation process.

It is vital that we share the message of how this piece was created, with the support and trust of a community of people, without which there would be no artistic work.

Thank you.
