Menace and Occupy
San Francisco, California  A shared performance between Tim Rubel Human Shakes and Palanza Dance. Tim Rubel Human Shakes presents the world premiere of Menace, a new contemporary dance piece for six dancers choreographed by Tim Rubel. Menace asks the audience to consider who we choose to devour and who we choose to save. Palanza Dance Company presents OCCUPY, a study of what we claim as ours, a contemporary dance theater piece for 12 dancers, choreographed by Hilary Palanza.

About Menace:
Menace is a descent into madness. It is a negotiation between self-control and self-indulgence. It presents a landscape of visceral reality, where whimsical intuition is favored over mindful logic. Menace asks who we choose to devour and who we choose to save; which lives are deemed expendable, unimportant, trite, while others are deemed sacred? This piece poses questions about human urges that have violent implications. When do we turn on each other during tumultuous times? How do times of crisis reveal our insecurities, often pushing the menacing parts of our personalities to center stage? Menace explores these dirty and less flattering sides of humanity, through movement and text that is physically aggressive, sharp and unpredictable but rounded out with a sense of vulnerability. The dancers move in a way that reveals a kind of anxiety and anticipation about who may be watching and what the watcher might do to them. With the tragic events that have occurred in France and those that continue to occur in parts of the Middle East, a new set of questions has emerged for the work during this artistic process: Whose deaths are mourned and whose are forgotten? As we mourn the loss of Westerners attacked by religious extremists, have we forgotten or disregarded the ongoing loss that people in the Middle East face daily because of the same type of extremists, but also from misguided Military action? Menace will feature dancers: Will Griffin, Brenda Li, Svetlana Pivchik, Ann Spengler, Nicholas Stettenbenz, and Hannah Westbrook. Music composed by David Molina.

About OCCUPY:
OCCUPY looks into how memory takes up space in our consciousness. How we relate to ourselves, one another, and our story informs how we live our lives and what we claim as "ours."  Are we owning a past based on love, fear, or imagination, and how does this inform how we live our lives now?

We look forward to seeing you at our show!

Tim Rubel Human Shakes (TRHS) is a project-based contemporary dance company who exists primarily to present the work of Choreographer Tim Rubel. The company makes evening length dances that ask palpable questions about the complexities behind human relationships, using wit, athleticism and choreographic collaboration. Formed in 2010, TRHS has been presented in San Francisco at several different venues and festivals including the National Queer Arts Festival and Fort Mason presents. Much of the company's work explores the lived experiences of the LGBT community. Our last evening work Here and Then used the legacy of Harvey Milk as inspiration for the piece that juxtaposed feelings of homelessness and restlessness in the LGBT community with actual members of this community who find themselves without homes in San Francisco. The presentation of our work often includes video-taped interviews of people whose stories have influenced the development of the piece. The company is a fiscally sponsored project of Dancers Group, and has received grant support from the Zellerbach Family Foundation.

Tim Rubel is a San Francisco-based dance artist. He received his M.F.A. in Dance/Experimental Choreography from the University of California, Riverside. He has been on the dance faculties of several institutions in California, including San Francisco State University, Mt. San Jacinto College, Alonzo King LINES Dance Center, as well as Dancing People Company in Ashland, OR and the Beijing Dance Festival in Beijing, China. His professional dance performance credits include work with Fusionworks Dance Company in Providence, RI, Windhover Dance Company in Massachusetts, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, OR, and in San Francisco with the David Herrera Performance Company, Lenora Lee Dance and Kim Epifano/Epiphany Productions to name a few. He is also the Artistic Director of Tim Rubel Human Shakes, a project-based Contemporary Dance Company in San Francisco. His choreography has received support from the Zellerbach Family Foundation and has been presented on both U.S. coasts. In 2013 he became the first ever Artist-in-Residence at the Harvey Milk Center for the Arts, where Tim Rubel Human Shakes developed their most recent evening-length work, Here and Then.

Palanza Dance celebrates performance as an opportunity to collectively process the paradigms of our human experience. We establish an aesthetic which is raw, beautiful and concise. We honor and reach for ongoing artistic collaborations. Palanza Dances performances and workshops aim to reach people who like to connect to story, beauty and the language of contemporary dance through the voice and vision of Director Hilary Palanza. Palanza Dance was formed in December 2009 by Hilary Palanza. Our work includes two purposes: a desire for a connection to the audience via the expression of a specific human story through dance and to stay true to the emerging aesthetic of Palanza Dance  an honest, emotionally compelling and straightforward choreographic voice.

Hilary Palanza, founder and artistic director of PALANZA DANCE, was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Hilary graduated cum laude with a BA in dance from Colorado College in 2006, and continued her training with the Bates College Dance Festival and the University of Arizona. Hilary is a certified instructor with the National Dance Institute under direction of Jaques DAmboise of NYC Ballet. Hilary moved to San Francisco in 2007 and danced professionally for three years with the David Herrera Performance Company and Kim Epifano/ SF Trolley Dances. Hilary created PALANZA Dance in 2009. PALANZA Dance has performed in over 30 venues including the DeYoung Museum, ODC Theater and Dance Mission Theater. Her career as a Company Director, performer and master teacher have afforded incredible dance-making opportunities in locations including NYC, India and the greater Bay Area.
