TJARNBLOM
A Scandinavian-style string band, Tjärnblom travels on a modern Snoose Boulevard Highway of Swedish, Finnish, and American tunes, old and new, played on nyckelharpas, mandolins and a harmonium. Members of the band are Joe Alfano, Mary Crimi, Val Eng, and Cheryl Paschke, all of Minneapolis. They take the name Tjärnblom in honor of Cheryl's grandfather; it means woodland lake flower in Swedish.

Tjärnbloms music has been featured in many settings around town including at the American Swedish Institute, KFAI and on A Prairie Home Companion. Their solo CD, Nicollet Island Waltz includes the title track and other selections for dancing and listening. Tjärnblom can also be heard on the first Minnesota Fiddle Tunes Project CD, a compilation recording of music of immigrants to Minnesota in the 19th century.

"And therein lies the charm and beauty of the nyckelharpa and Tjärnblom - the group not the flower. Out of this medieval instrument, hewed and coaxed from wood, strung with metal, pre-industrial age in its engineering, comes some of the most subtle and beautiful music that one can imagine.  heavy boots stomping across a dance floor, but also spring flowers around a pond: it is all there in the nyckelharpa as played by Cheryl Paschke (first nyckelharpa) and Mary Crimi (second nyckelharpa).  Add to this the wheezing of an old portable pump organ (Val "It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that" Eng) and the chunk-chunk rhythm and double melody lines of an octave mandolin ("Smoking" Joe Alfano) with both instruments contributing their own versions of beauty, and you have the wonderful ensemble, Tjärnblom."- Kip Peltoniemi, Certified Ethnomusicological Technician
