Oakland, Calif. Join Uppity Edutainment for a black film series at Oakstop (1721 Broadway)every Thursday in March. All events start at 6:00 p.m. with dialogue and dinner. Film screenings begin promptly at 7p.m. Tickets are $10 for the screening, $20 will include dinner. Marchs films will honor classic films and new films by local filmmakers. This ongoing film series will spark dialogue as a catalyst for change and will create access to black cinema in the Bay Area.
On March 3th, the group will screen Claudine, the 1974 romantic drama with too many social implications to name. The dialogue lovers and local couples.
On March 10th, we will screen The Spook Who Sat by the Door, a film that explores issues of Black Nationalism and civil rights in America in the late 1960s. Preceding the film will be a dialogue facilitated by Dr. Nathan Hare, an American sociologist, activist, academic, and clinical psychologist.
On March 17th, come experience Where is Hope, a film documentary, which brings to light the deaths of and brutality against the disabled community by the police. This local films dialogue will be facilitated by the films creators. Emmitt H. Thrower, a retired New York City policeman, now artist/filmmaker and Leroy Moore, a writer, poet, and activist.
On March 24th, see Pariah, a film exploring queer youth identity. Facilitator Lisa Evans will lead a discussion titled How is the Community Present for Queer and Trans Youth of Color? A portion of proceeds will go to QT Network of Alameda Countys The Time Is Now, a LGBTQI Youth Summit.
On March 31th, the attendees will view and discuss Not For Sale- The Oscar C. Wright Story,. Michael Lange, prior to his ascension in 2015, conducted a series of interviews with Mr. Oscar C. Wright, an Oakland community activist, educator, and griot. Its not me, its the truth you hate. Mr. Wright will be in attendance to facilitate this once in a life time dialogue.
