WHAT'S YOUR WISH? was produced, directed, performed and written collaboratively by the members of Thicket & Thistle, a team of theatre artists devoted to creating new musical theatre in which the actors provide live musical accompaniment. It debuted as a ten-minute musical at Theatre Now New York's Second-annual Sound Bite's Ten Minute Musical Festival in December 2014. The semi-improvised, extended 75 minute version was collective devised by the members of Thicket & Thistle: Kyle Acheson, Sam De Roest, Nyssa Duchow, Jonathan Eric Foster, Sarah George, Corley Pillsbury & Joshua Stenseth. In May 2015, an extended, 75 minute version of the so was accepted into the New York International Fringe Festival -FringeNYC as part of the FringeAL FRESCO division, which provide free, outdoor shows to New York City audiences. The show was directed by Jonathan Eric Foster and produced by Sarah George for under $4,000. The extended, fully-staged version of What's Your Wish? premiered as a part of FringeAL FRESCO in August 2015 at the 6th Street and Avenue B Community Garden. It was named a "Best Bet" of FringeNYC 2015 by the online theatre publication Theatre Is Easy, and was also performed at the Chekhov Theatre Festival in Ridgewood, CT. Thicket & Thistle strives to create theatre that is inherently simple to produce, yet bold in its effect - adhering to this "suitcase theatre" tenet, everything used for the FringeNYC Production of WHAT'S YOUR WISH?, other than the instruments, could be packed into the trunk and backseat of a car. The backdrops for the show were hand-painted on canvas and draped over collapsible costume racks, and were the only set pieces used for the show. In addition to the backdrops, most of the props and costumes were hand-made by members of Thicket & Thistle, including an interactive, flying crow puppet.
WHAT'S YOUR WISH? follows the tale of two teenagers, Nicholas and Brian, who, on the night of Nicholas' birthday, suddenly find themselves sucked out of their own reality and into that of a magically enchanted book. Once there, they discover that they've becoming unwitting denizens of a land called Death Forest, which is about as fun as it sounds. Immediately pining for the comforts of their normal lives, they are confronted with questions they've never had to face before how far they're willing to go to get back, what it means to be a man, and what their friendship is really worth. On their journey to return home, some of the guides they encounter are charmingly helpful like Old Vern the Trash Rat while others have more sinister motives. But how to tell the difference in a world so unfamiliar? The boys must learn to trust themselves and each other in order to make it out alive.
