Berkeley Choro Ensemble performs the inaugural presentation for the First Sunday Cultural Event Series at NVUU in Napa.
The Berkeley Choro Ensemble (pronounced "shoro") is a group of world-class musicians celebrating the music, culture and history of Brazil, with a special emphasis on the Choro genre.
Choro is music uniquely Brazilian. It's technically challenging and full of interesting melodic turns, captivating rhythms, and harmonic surprises, all while embodying a unique blend of liveliness and relaxation. Outside of Brazil, it's appreciated by both classical and jazz aficionados.
Choro emerged in the 1800's as the music of Brazil's European immigrants merged with the native music of Brazil's indigenous and African populations. Unlike many other styles from that period of time, Choro continues to evolve in the present while retaining much of its original character. Many of the musicians performing Choro today also compose, actively expanding the repertoire. Contemporary Choro performances sound remarkably modern and are very accessible for new audiences.
Regular members Jane Lenoir (flute), Brian Rice (pandiero), Ricardo Peixoto (guitar), and Harvey Wainapel (woodwinds) welcome Brazilian cavaquista Kiko Lazzarotto for an afternoon of wonderful, uniquely Brazilian, music. Additional musicians TBA.
General admission for unreserved seating: $20. Doors open at 1:25pm.
