The Rueff at A.C.T.'s Strand Theater 1127 Market Street, San Francisco
V-DAY This performance of The Vagina Monologues is presented as a part of V-Day's Campaign, ONE BILLION RISING, the biggest mass action to end violence against women. In 2015, millions of activists in over 200 countries came together for Rise for REVOLUTION, to alter the paradigm, demand accountability, justice, and systematic change. Each year, thousands of V-Day benefit events take place produced by volunteer activists in the U.S. and around the world. These efforts have raised consciousness, changed laws to protect women and girls, funded rape crisis centers and domestic violence shelters (in many cases these much needed funds kept them from closing), educated their communities, and raised over $100 million in urgently needed funds for groups doing the essential work of ending violence and serving survivors and their families.
The Vagina Monologues The award-winning play is based on V-Day Founder/playwright Eve Ensler's interviews with more than 200 women. With humor and grace, the piece celebrates women's sexuality and strength. Through this play and the liberation of this one word, countless women throughout the world have taken control of their bodies and their lives. For more than a decade, The Vagina Monologues has given voice to experiences and feelings not previously exposed in public and brought a deeper consciousness to the conversation around ending violence against women and girls.
The Beneficiaries
Oasis for Girls Founded in '99, the mission of Oasis For Girls is to partner with girls and young women of color from under-resourced communities in San Francisco to help them cultivate the skills, knowledge, and confidence to discover their dreams and build strong futures. Oasis For Girls focuses on low-income immigrant girls and girls of color, ages 14-17, in San Francisco. They strive to work with girls who are on the edge of risk; those who are off the radar or unnoticed, disengaged and undersupported; and those who have just begun dabbling in difficulty.
W.O.M.A.N., Inc. Women Organized to Make Abuse Nonexistent, Inc. (W.O.M.A.N., Inc.) has operated since '78 as a community-based, multi-service agency, serving survivors of domestic violence in San Francisco and the larger Bay Area. Offering services such as a 24- hour support line and individual and family therapy, W.O.M.A.N., Inc. supports those impacted by violence using an innovative approach to services and programs that build stronger, safer communities.
This production contains strong language and strong women.
