A live performance by Broadway actress and Fulbright Scholar QUANDA JOHNSON

Quanda Johnson, Performing Artist/Writer Quanda Johnson is a Philadelphia native who has performed on and off Broadway, opera, and in regional theater, national, and international tours. A Dean's Graduate Scholar at New York University's Gallatin School of Individualized Study concentrating in Africana Studies/Performance Activism, Quanda was privileged to be invited to take part in the November 2015 TEDx Jersey City Conference -- Metamorphosis in which she performed and spoke on Breaking to Build: Dismantling Black Archetypes through Collage as Performance Art. A recipient of the Fulbright Award and a Fulbright Community Leadership Program Grant, she wrote, edited, and directed her culminating Fulbright project Beyond the Veil of the Sorrow Songs, an interdisciplinary, multimedia theatrical concert examining the Underground Railroad as it related to Atlantic Canada and Quebec, along with contemporary racial issues in the Maritimes. Beyond the Veil of the Sorrow Songs was performed at the Dalhousie Arts Centre, Halifax, Nova Scotia and the Alderney Landing Theatre in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Her work was supported by Dalhousie University Theatre and Music, as well as the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design Media Arts. Her other original works produced in the New York area are Lyrical Langston: His Muse for Music and My Lord What a Morning!: The Life of Marian Anderson in Her Own Words. She has an MFA in Acting from the New School University (NYC) and a Master of Music degree from the Conservatory of Music at Brooklyn College. Nominated for an AUDELCO Award (Best Actress) for her portrayal of Marian Anderson, she appeared in Broadway's Tony award-winning Ragtime and spent three seasons with New York City Opera. Off Broadway she has appeared at the Cherry Lane Alternative, Chelsea Repertory Theater, Brave New World Theater, and DL3. She portrayed Winnie Mandela along side Alton White with Judy Kaye in Off Broadway's Mandela. All of her work is dedicated to the memory of the first artist in her life, her mother, Vernetta.
