The Spirit of the Baobab Tree
The Spirit of he Baobab Tree is an original "dance-umentary" that takes audiences on a journey through time through the perspective of nine-year old Jelani, a young boy who often loses himself in his sketchbook. Jelani drawings spring to life and he is joined by Iyabo, a magical griot who teaches Jelani and his classmates the lessons of their history.
Based on the storybook written by Dionne Champion and Sherice Grant The Spirit of the Baobab Tree is a modern-day folktale told through a timeline of African-American history. Performed by the students of DancExcel, Champion Center for Creative Arts Education, Baobab Tree is a moving and inspirational story which uses varied styles of dance, music, and spoken word to portray some of the most significant moments of history.
