Who: Hello my name is Deborah Hughes and I am 29 years of age. I currently reside in Atlanta and will always call it my home. No matter where I travel in the world Atlanta has my heart. I am an artist in the sense of anything creative. My professional genres of focus are dance and design. I have studied and continually perform contemporary modern, contemporary ballet, and African dance, as well as hip hop which is my first love. When I'm not on the road dancing I am making clothes for various artist, photo shoots, clients, or just for my personal flyness . So that's a brief snippet of myself as an artist.
Why: I haven't celebrated my birthday in years because I am lame and am a workaholic. For my 30th and my new year, I would like to change that. I just don't want to have a party, I want to start my new year as I always do. I normally awake to have my time of meditation and go volunteer my time in a soup kitchen or homeless shelter without mentioning my birthday and I continue on with my day. This year I want to continue in the same vein of giving but on a bigger scale.
What/When: My birthday is the 9th of April. The events will take place April 6th-8th. I want to start with a community day on Wednesday April 6th, which will be at my gardens I have in the Peoples Town community. At this site we will be conducting a garden expo, host vendors, discourse healthy living, yoga in the park, workout classes, free hair cuts, and send families home with fresh veggies. Thursday April 7th will be the debut of my clothing line D'Varia. This will be the first time I will have produced such a show. April 8th will be the actual birthday party. At the party I will give away two creative scholarships along with non-perishable food items we would have been collecting throughout our engagements. All activities will take place in Atlanta. For those who would like to participating as vendors, donors, funding scholarships, or all of the above locations are accessible via request.
How: People who are looking to get involved may do so in various ways. If you own a business and would love to expand your reach to the artistry/health community, we have vendor and donor opportunities available. If you are an individual and would like to donate to the scholarships and be a donor ,you have the opportunity as well. In the event that anyone wants to participate in multiple ways opportunities to be both a vendor and donor are available. Also another option to give back would be our creative scholarship.
Why: I am giving a scholarship to anyone interested in pursuing a career in creative fields (ie. Photography, dance, music, theatre, but not limited to...Remember Art is Life!!). The criteria will be to submit a body of work along with an artist statement in addition to their plans for the future. The second scholarship will be granted to a graduating senior from my alma mater at Greenwood High School. Growing up in Greenwood, SC I always knew I wanted to be an artist; however, exposure and limited professional resources proved to be challenging in this area. There was no definitive course of action for a graduating aspiring "Artist." So all I knew was I had to get out of Greenwood. Step1: Leave!!!!!!! That's exactly what I did, I left and pursued my dreams. The plan was never to leave and not look back. I always said to myself when I get to a point where I can help a creative student from where I am from I would do so. I am grateful that I have been blessed to accomplish this goal and if you would like to help in any endeavors, I welcome them. Another component I am aligning along with this scholarship is mentorship. I am not just interested in providing money and resources, but in imparting experiential knowledge from professionals and their journeys to our Artist. I will match you with a professional in that specific genre of creativity that will guide you towards your career path. This will be the first year I will have donated a scholarship, and it is in this charitable spirit that I will kick off to my non-profit organization Creating A Legacy. That's exactly what I aim to do and hopefully that energy pays it forward. Thank you in advance for your heart to give your efforts. If you have any questions please feel free to call or email and please share with others who you think may also be interested. Again thank you.
