Leave the winter blues behind with an evening of Haitian music, dance, food and art, to raise funds for Haiti Rehabilitation Foundation, now training the first class of occupational therapists and physical therapists to receive a four-year professional degree in Haiti.

The evening will feature:

Event MC: TV News Anchor Valerio Saint-Louis

Music by Jean Jean Roosevelt

Drumming by La Troupe Makandal, with dance by La Troupe Zetwal

Music by Isaacson Buteau

Art by Yolene LeGrand

There will be an auction, raffle, light food and drinks, and a presentation of our work at the nursing school of the Episcopal University of Haiti (UNEPH) in the town of Léogâne.

Haiti Rehabilitation Foundation (HRF) has undertaken a unique task of capacity-building in Haiti.  We have joined with the well-respected nursing department of an accredited Haitian university to offer academic degrees in Occupational Therapy (OT) and Physical Therapy (PT).  There are more than 1.5 million people in Haiti (over 15% of the population of about 10 million) who have a disability, but the number of Haitians with a professional degree in rehabilitation is miniscule:  about 50 Haitian PTs, and 1 Haitian OT, all of whom attended college in the Dominican Republic.

This year, for the first time, 7 students of OT and PT are studying together in Haiti, with the nursing students of the Episcopal University of Haiti.  They are enrolled in four-year programs designed to meet the international standards of the World Federation of OT and the World Confederation of PT.  The cost of the program has been kept as low as possible:  students pay S3000 US per year for tuition, room & board, uniforms, access to books and technology, and transportation for clinical education. The remainder of the costs for their education ($1000 more per student) is borne by fund-raising.  Even so, all seven of the first year students are sponsored:  five are sponsored by clinics that plan to hire them upon completion of the degree, and two are sponsored directly by HRF.

Members of the Haiti Rehab Foundation board are volunteers who serve without compensation. This effort has excited and inspired a diverse group of professionals, from Haiti and the US:  we are OTs, PTs, university faculty, public health experts, social workers, and nurses.  We have a volunteer dean in place in Léogâne, Haiti.  We have begun an innovative method of teaching that engages a US faculty member with a local provider of therapy, using a combination of in-person apprenticeship and technological resources, from pre-recorded lectures and reference materials to distance learning.  We are working toward our ambitious goal of a fully Haitian faculty, with appropriate advanced credentials, within ten years.

Haiti Rehab Foundation is a 501©3 registered non-profit organization, and donations to HRF are tax deductible.
