Gathering of the Tribes/Bright Star in the Night
Come join us for a day of dance, flow and fun. An afternoon of workshops: Props from the Tops!! Want to try your skill at learning a new prop? This is the time to give it a twirl.
12-1:30pm "Raks al Sayf" - The Sword Dance! with Baseema Come and learn the fine art of sword dancing where the beauty and elegance of belly dance are contrasted by the dangerous sword! During this workshop we'll learn some fun sword balance tricks. On multiple balance points! Then, we'll work our way through non-balance sword movements and combinations to add excitement to your sword dance. Sword dancing is for every style of dance. So, whether you're a Tribal dancer, Raks Sharki dancer, or somewhere in between, this workshop is for you. No sword dance experience necessary, but previous belly dance experience is required. Never sword danced before? Don't have a sword? That's OK, too. There will be a few swords to borrow for those brave enough to try. Baseema will have Baladay Scimitars for purchase. These will be $60 each.
1:45-3:15pm Tambourine with Neylan The tambourine is a beautiful instrument to enhance the feminine spirit in belly dance. A smaller version of the Frame drum, aligned with cymbals in it's rig, the tambourine calls to the ancient Goddess of the Moon. In this workshop, we will explore different techniques to hold. Learn basic sounds of the tambourine that accentuate the movements found in belly dance. We'll discovering framing moves, rhythmic accents and exciting combinations. Whether or Tribal, Fusion or Traditional styles of Belly dance, the tambourine adds beauty and excitement to your dance. Previous belly dance experience is helpful. No drumming experience necessary. A round frame skin covered tambourine is required: skin may be either natural or synthetic, 1 or 2 rows of cymbals acceptable. Tambourines will be available to borrow or purchase. Purchase cost $12
3:30-5pm Introduction to Buugeng with DJ Chad Buu Martial Arts Geng Illusion Buugeng is a unique performance and visual art involving curved spinning props, martial arts movements, and dance which can create a mesmerizing, kaleidoscopic experience for the audience, as well as a meditative experience for the performer. From the originator of the art form, Dia Zaoboab: Working with the Buugeng brings about feelings of balance, control, form, an calm, whilst activating the Warrior Spirit and mind energy. It develops Chi, muscle tone, confidence and focus. Buugeng performances leave the audience amazed and wowed! This workshop will discuss what Buugeng is as well as the exploring some of the origins of this relatively new spinning art. Working with the props, we will explore the hand movements and positioning required to begin Buugeng practice, including two styles of wrist rolls, finger rolls, and forward and reverse spins. We will also touch upon a few of the more crowd-pleasing advanced techniques such as body tracers and spins/pinwheels. Instruction will include direct hands-on instruction by Chad as well as video demonstrations.
