National Association of Geoscience Teachers - Far Western Section - Spring 2016, Conference Santa Barbara, CA
Due to strong registrations, Point Sal Field Trip, Santa Barbara Backcountry Trip, Boat Tour, and Landslide Trip are now CLOSED. There are still great options available, the Tectonic Geomorphology Field Trip on Saturday, and Science Discovery Day workshop on Sunday morning. Please come join us!

***PLEASE NOTE: Location for Friday and Saturday keynote speakers has changed to Physical Science Building, Rm. 101.***

Join us at Santa Barbara City College for an informative and fun-filled weekend exploring local geology through field trips, talks, and an interactive workshop. Come discover how much this beautiful stretch of California coastline has to offer the Earth Science enthusiast! This conference is open to anyone with an interest in Earth Science, and includes field trips to the Santa Barbara back country and Santa Ynez Mountains, coastal areas, and Santa Barbara Channel natural oil and gas seeps. Great speakers, and our Science Discovery Day workshop round out this weekend of entertaining and educational events. Good food and camaraderie too! Registration fee includes field trips with transportation provided, guidebook, Friday evening social, continental breakfast on Saturday and Sunday, Saturday box lunch and Saturday evening BBQ. Field Trips Include:

A. Tectonic Geomorphology of the Santa Barbara Fold/Thrust Belt, led by Dr. Ed Keller (UCSB) and Dr. Larry Gurrola, Consulting Engineering Geologist; Learn about the on-going interaction between compressive tectonic forces and erosion that shape our beautiful coastal plain.  Plus insights into earthquake history and hazards!

B. Geology of the Santa Barbara Backcountry Transect from the Transverse Range to the Coast Range, led by Dr. Robert Gray, Emeritus Professor, SBCC; Study the Cretaceous to Miocene stratigraphy and complex compressional and lateral structures of the region. Vehicle access to beautiful and normally inaccessible areas, including Gibraltar Reservoir and parts of the backcountry.

C. Geology of the Point Sal Ophiolite Complex, led by Dr. Jeffrey Meyer, Professor, SBCC; See one of the best-preserved and exposed cross-sections of the ocean crust in the US. Must be prepared for rock scrambling on rough terrain. ***Early registration is required to obtain access onto Vandenberg Air Force Base. Additionally, those interested in this field trip must provide their country of citizenship, their name as it appears on their driver's license and their driver's license number in order to obtain clearance. Participants must also bring their government issued ID on the field trip.***

A. Boat tour of the Santa Barbara Oil and Gas Seeps; led by Dr. Stephanie Mendes, UCSB, SBCC, and Chris Peltonen, Venoco;  Visit and explore the world's largest and best studied natural oil and gas seep field, Coal Oil Point. Sponsored by Venoco, Inc. DEPARTURE TIME: 7:30 AM

B. Landslides in Sycamore Canyon and La Conchita; led by Dr. Bill Dinklage, Professor SBCC; Investigating slumping and debris flows, and attempts to remediate them, in the (unstable) Santa Barbara/Carpinteria area. DEPARTURE TIME: 8:00 AM

C. Science Discovery Workshop; Gain ideas for your own projects.  Numerous student-guided interactive displays, including our new 3D "Augmented Reality" topographic sandbox!  Also, special guest National Academy of Sciences member, Tanya Atwater, with her geo-educational toys and videos.
