About the Choirs:
The Virginia Glee Club is a critically acclaimed men's chorus based at the University of Virginia. It performs both traditional and contemporary vocal works, typically in TTBB arrangements. Founded in 1871, the Glee Club is the University's oldest musical organization and one of the oldest all-male collegiate vocal ensembles in the United States. It is currently conducted by Frank Albinder.
The acclaimed Smith College Glee Club is open by audition to women in all of the upper classes, including Ada Comstock scholars. The group rehearses twice weekly and performs at all-college events and choral concerts, including Montage, Autumn Serenade, and Vespers. The group performs a diverse repertoire, including the premiere women's choral pieces from Western art music, new works commissioned specifically for the group, and jazz, contemporary, and folk music. Each spring, men's glee clubs from colleges such as Harvard, Rutgers, the Naval Academy, the University of Michigan, and the University of Virginia collaborate with the Glee Club in performances of major works that have included Carmina Burana, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, and Brahms's German Requiem. The Glee Club has been featured at annual conventions of the American Choral Directors Association and the National Collegiate Choral Organization.
The dynamic Smith College Chorus is open by audition to all women of the Smith community, though its primary focus is on first-year students. This group sings timeless, beloved classics of the choral repertoire as well as popular standards and exciting new works for women's chorus. Concert opportunities include all main Smith choral concerts: Montage, Autumn Serenade, Vespers, and Spring Serenade. Highlights of recent Chorus performances include the Vivaldi Gloria with chamber orchestra and student soloists and a collaboration with the Smith College Glee Club & Orchestra and the Virginia Men's Glee Club in performance of Carmina Burana.
