The Étude Sessions Presents: Gospel Machine
On Friday, April 15, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. Paradigm Coffee & Music will fill with the "garage gospel" sound of Gospel Machine from Minneapolis. Gospel Machine is performing as part of The Étude Sessions, an initiative to nurture live music as a fundraiser for The Étude Group schools in Sheboygan.

GOSPEL MACHINE
Gospel Machine is comprised of five veteran members of the Minneapolis music scene wanting to try something new. In March of 2015, they launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to release their first album, Your Holy Ghost, which was released later that year. The band, Jayanthi Kyle on vocals, Wes Burdine on guitar and backing vocals, Scott Munson on keys, David Osborn on drums, and Jimmy Osterholt on bass, brings us a new take on classic styles of soul and pop. They call this sound garage gospel, "a way for us to describe music about redemption from racism, from sexism, from war and violence, and between two people in love. But it's also about making music with the urgency of garage pop," songwriter Wes Burden told MPR News. Audience goers can expect not to be taken to church, but to be taken on a journey of life and love.

"Liking this band feels effortless. I mean, of course it's a good idea to combine Jayanthi Kyle of Black Audience's incredible, soulful voice with the rhythms and riffs of '60s garage pop." - Andrea Swennson, 89.3 The Current

"Your Holy Ghost not only pierces the fabric of today's divisive culture, but also gets to the heart of what's wrong with it. The record is an odd, compelling hybrid of teeth-rattling roots and blues: vast, dense, complicated, and rustic. It's not uncommon for bands to try and blend genres, but to actually pull it off and make the result sound coherent is another matter." -Youa Vang, CityPages

THE ÉTUDE SESSIONS
Proceeds from The Étude Sessions ensure transformative experiences for students in the arts and academics such as college readiness initiatives, international travel, and artist in residence programs, that would not otherwise be available to public school students. During the 2014-2015 season a portion of the funds helped send students on a service-learning trip to Nicaragua in June. Students envisioned their professional lives beyond high school through participation in creative writing festivals, dance workshops, and engineering in the community experiences. They also visited eight different colleges in Wisconsin, including Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, Milwaukee School of Engineering, UW-Milwaukee, and UW-Madison. The intention The Étude Sessions is to make these experiences accessible to all students in the Étude schools, 80% of whom are first generation college students and over 50% of whom qualify for free or reduced lunch.

The Étude Sessions is the brainchild of Troy Tousey, founder of Open Mind Studios of Sheboygan, Wis. Troy, an avid community supporter and passionate live music fan, hosted house concerts in his backyard and attended hundreds of live performances during his years at Northwestern University, and while living in Colorado and Sheboygan.  Troy was vice president of The Étude Group Governing Board, part of the Sheboygan Area School District, at the time of his death in June of 2012.  Troy dreamed of presenting music like PHOX to Sheboygan to benefit the community, the music, and The Étude Group schools.
