Roots&Wings Rhythm Band
A 13-week Non-Audition Ensemble Performance Course for 'Tweens and Teens Wednesdays, 5:00-6:30 Hosted by Musicollaborative's Mid-City/Fairgrounds Studio in Funky NOLA(1700 North Broad) Facilitated by Kaya Martínez, MME (Winds and Vocals) Todd Credeur (Guitar & Drums) Satrell Perdue, H.S. Intern (Piano, Winds)
This series is designed for young* Musicians interested in performing blues, rock, jazz and funk to enjoy weekly vocal and instrumental ensemble music making in a fun, challenging, non-competitive atmosphere culminating in a public performance at a top New Orleans music venue. We play both by ear and from notation, so basic music theory is integrated into the rehearsals.
This program is unique in the sense that students are invited to get inside of the music from different angles; for example, they are encouraged to explore grooves on the drum set, bass lines on the bass and sing as well as play melodies. Most of our students play two or more instruments during concerts.
Included are vocal music, hand percussion, mallet percussion, and basic music theory, and we have a piano, bass and guitar amps and microphones available on site. Horn players who have studied for a year or more are welcome to bring their horns as well. The weekly rehearsals will build technical facility and augment musicianship while emphasizing creativity, improvisation and collaboration.
Highly motivated students make the best members of this band. Because this is a performing ensemble, punctual weekly attendance in addition to practice at home are necessary to ensure the success of the individual and the ensemble.
*Minimum age is 8 and at least one year of prior music instruction is required for all children under 10.
