EMILY'S List ELLEN R. MALCOLM | When Women Win
Hillside Club
Berkeley, CA
Share this event:

It's hard to imagine any election news right now that doesn't mention EMILY's List, the nation's largest resource for women in politics (in fact, one of the most powerful political organizations to support men OR women). EMILY's List's mission is simple: to elect Democratic women up and down the ballot, all across the country. And with more than 3 million members nationwide, they've proven they have the strategy and muscle to do it.

But when EMILY's List founder Ellen R.Malcolm got her start in American politics forty years ago, there was no such resource  and the men in power didn't want to make any room. "Virtually no one in either major political party took women candidates seriously," writes Malcolm in When Women Win. "For generations, the good old boys of both parties had kept women out of office. The political establishment didn't think women could win, so they refused to contribute to their campaigns. And without any money to run serious campaigns, women candidates were doomed to defeat. It wasthe world's most exclusive men's club."

Bit-by-bit, and with Malcolm at the helm, EMILY's List assembled a team of passionate, driven women who battled obstacles to build their own party structure: a political organization that, in addition to fundraising, trained people to be campaign managers, to track local campaigns, to oversee media, to win and to govern. When Women Win highlights Malcolm's thirty-year effort to get women elected (think Clinton, Warren, Mikulski, Kamala Harris, and trained about 9,000 others), give women donors the kind of influence you can't ignore in electoral politics, and bring millions of women voters to the polls -- published just in time, perhaps, for our first woman president to win in 2016?
