Carrying the Load
Young Clara Evans and her husband are part of the early 1900s great Black migration north due to unsatisfactory economic opportunities and harsh segregationist laws. Depression era life is burdensome until she is changed by embracing a new belief system. She adopts a new way of life that promotes 'educating our own' which challenges the 1930s segregated school system of Detroit. Her resolve to 'nation build' is strengthened as she establishes one of America's first African American owned and operated parochial schools.
