Leaping Through The Looking Glass
Tri-City Union Gospel Mission Women and Children's shelter is holding their first ever fundraising event to promote awareness and to fund operations and expansion in the coming four years. This event will be held on Feb. 29th at 6:30 PM - 9 PM. Dinner will be served. This will only happen every four years.  

The Women and Children's shelter was purchased in the month of December in 1980. Since then our needs have changed as has our community. The population has exploded as well as the poverty rates in our community.  Many women and children have been affected by the shortage of housing and the decrease of supportive services.  

Our plan for the next four years is to prevent, provide and plan.

The prevention is done through Thursday community giveaway. This program takes community donations of clothing and household items and gives them to the working poor in our community.This community resource operates every Thursday except Thanksgiving and Christmas. It has provided needed support to the working poor in our community. This outreach also supports our local agencies that work closely with at risk populations. Some of our community partners that use this outreach as a resource are Kennewick School District, Boy's and Girls' club teen parenting program, SARC, and Communities In Schools of Benton-Franklin Counties  just to name a few.  Our goal is to raise awareness of the need for preventative resources in our community and to provide hope to those who use our services that this will get better if they continue to make wise choices.

The providing and planning part of our four year plan includes monetary needs for our agency. We have operated with private donations from the community for the last 35 years. This has allowed us to provide stable services to those in need.  But, we have a vision of not just housing and feeding those in need but, being able to provide life skills and hope through case management. We would like to hire a counselor full time to help assist with this area.


We currently can house up to 32 women and children in our seven bedroom building.  In order for us to meet the growing demand for sheltering services we need to be able to raise the money for expansion.  We desire to help those who are looking for change and provide needed rescue services for those who struggle with addictions and mental health issues. We are unable to provide services to the extremes in these areas currently due to the limited space.  We plan to expand. We will renovate the existing men's facility after they move to become an emergency over night shelter for women and children.
