Vicky Chow Performs Surface Image // February 13, 2016
Vicky Chow February 13, 2016 Put simply, Surface Image is Tristan Perich's best music to date, moving and stimulating both the emotions and intellect. The piece combines the virtuosic capabilities of pianist Vicky Chow (Bang on a Can All-Stars) with Perich's signature use of 1-bit electronics - in this case powering an array of 40 speakers that envelope performer and audience in sound.
"The music is harmonically written to fit together," explains Chow. "Often times, the electronics and the piano part are performing similar rhythms and melodies; sometimes they are hocketing in rhythm, interlocking tightly on a constant grid. Both play different musical roles, sometimes leading, sometimes accompanying, but most often it is equal parts in a musical machine." The result is a thoroughly engrossing experience of dreamy, atmospheric post-minimalist music that you will never forget.
Canadian pianist Vicky Chow has been described as "brilliant" (New York Times) and "one of the new stars of new music" (Los Angeles Times). She has premiered works by a slew of iconic composers - from Steve Reich and John Adams to Lee Renaldo and Bryce Dessner - and is a member of New York's preeminent new music ensemble, the Bang on a Can All-Stars.
