In September 2013 renowned 90-year old Sephardic composer and performer Flory Jagoda headlined her Celebration Concert in the prestigious halls of the U.S. Library of Congress. A National Heritage Fellow, the highest honor given by the U.S. to traditional artists, Flory was born in Sarajevo into a musical family. Her heritage stretched back to Spain for hundreds of years prior to the Jewish expulsion during the Inquisition in 1492. In a small Jewish community in Bosnia over the ensuing centuries, the songs and lyrics of that culture were lovingly passed down relatively intact, ultimately reaching Flory. The only member of her family to survive the Holocaust, Flory has spent her career composing, recording and performing this music worldwide.
Twenty-five musicians with whom she has performed over the years joined Flory at the sold-out Celebration Concert. "Flory's Flame" interlaces selections from the concert with episodes detailing her challenging and ultimately triumphant life path and her mission to ensure the continuity of her family's cultural legacy through her music.
A food and wine reception will precede the film.
After the film, the festival will feature a rare concert with Sephardic musician and composer Flory Jagoda, her daughter Betty, and two additional musicians.
One familiar composition is "Ocho Kandelikas" ("Eight Little Candles"), a lilting Ladino (Judeo-Spanish) song for the Jewish holiday of Chanukah.
Born in Sarajevo in 1923, internationally known singer and composer Flory Jagoda spent her childhood summers in the Bosnian village of Vlasenica. She was raised within her extended Altarac family, whose musical prowess, rich Sephardic traditions, and Ladino (Judeo-Spanish) language stretched back to pre-Inquisition Spain. She learned many traditional songs from her grandmother.
As a child Flory moved with her parents to Zagreb, where she received her first "harmonika" (accordion) and learned to play it by ear. During World War II, Flory and her parents escaped the Holocaust by moving first to Split on the Dalmatian Coast; then to the island of Korula in the Adriatic Sea; and finally to Bari, Italy. There she met and married U.S. Army Master Sgt. Harry Jagoda and arrived in America as a war bride in 1946.

Tickets can be purchased online up to 48 hours in advance of each film and event. Tickets for each film and event can also be purchased at the box office one hour prior to event or film based on availability.
All sales are final. There are no refunds.
