"I don't need to wear pants! It's my house and I can do what I want!"
Black Friday is a dark comedy set on the day after Thanksgiving in the chaotic home of Marlene and Helmuth Meier, a German-born couple living in suburban Wisconsin. They came to America following World War II, and made their lives there. Helmuth now has dementia and often believes he is a young man back in Europe. Marlene copes with this by bossing him around and spending her time buying jewelry on the Home Shopping Network. Their son Harry, who is never seen in the play, is married to Tracy, a biracial woman. They have two children, Sam and Kaitlyn. Today is Samʼs twelfth birthday, which leads to conflicts between Tracy and Marlene on what is the proper approach to parenting and running a home. This original play is a commentary on the modern family and poses a question on what the "American dream" means today.
