Z -- PROGRAM 11: Bronx World Film Cycle, Winter 2015
A TRICKY TREAT (SCR Kamal John Iskander, DIR Patricia Chica, CANADA/EL SALVADOR, 2015, TRT 3 min.11"). CAT: Horror, Comedy
Bronx World Film hosted Patricia Chica's first-ever New York City retrospective in the summer of 2013, and this is her second visit. In this new comedic short, which has swept awards in horror festivals across the world almost as soon as its release, a man is kidnapped by a very strange family. Two kids hold his fate in their hands. A Tricky Treat presents a shocking tale of the unexpected with a twist!
KASH, A SMOKING FANTASY (SCR/DIR Souman Bose, INDIA, 2014, TRT 60 min.) CAT: Mumblecore
Kashi Mehrothra, a motherless young man from an affluent merchant family, is heavily influenced as a näive adolescent by Ram Sen, a "proletarian" who peddles beedis (small Indian cigarettes) and becomes a tycoon. Ram Sen preaches: "Beedi unnoti'r shiri!" ("Indian cigars are the staircase to success!") Kashi resolves to surpass this uneducated man with a more sophisticated intoxicant, a proper cigarette, and his obsession with becoming India's "Cigarette King" earns him the nickname "Kash," ("puff" or "drag"). Along the way, his melancholic life is threatened by a supernatural creature, vis-á-vis Jack Ketch. Political satire, horror and drama stir behind a little puff of smoke. (In English with English subtitles. U.S. premiere)
LES BAISERS (SCR/DIR Fred Boyau, FRANCE, 2014, TRT 5 min.) CAT: Experimental
For a minute, while he sings an old traditional song from Guadeloupe, Fred turns his Parisian home into a seashore cottage on the Caribbean, and his young next door neighbor into a love muse. (In French with English subtitles)
