Z -- PROGRAM 10: Bronx World Film Cycle, Winter 2015
DE L'ORAGE DANS L'AIR ((SCR/DIR FRANCE, 2014, TRT, 1'45"), CAT: Experimental.
Each time R'kia's son wakes up at night, their old spinster next door neighbor wakes up too, and complains about the noise.
THE LAST BUS (SCR/DIR Maria Hengge. GERMANY, 2008. TRT 11 min) CAT: Fiction
A stranded woman from the sea, a tired Asian man and the driver of the last bus from Lisbon meet at the abyss on the edge of life and connect as they journey into the night. (New York City premiere)
FOR YOU (SCR Jeta Betjullahu and Daniel Diosdado. DIR Daniel Diosdado, SPAIN/USA, 2015, 4'47"), CAT: Fiction.
This short art film shows four artists depicting the lengths they all go to just to create. Each enacts a verse from a poem depicting mental distress, artistic determination and the psychological state of overcoming an artistic block expressed through physical pain. They continue to create as the pain level rises. Artists will fade away, however we all hope the collective experience of art and ART itself can transcend time and be passed on. (In English with Spanish subtitles)
SURVIVAL MAP FOR THE OUTSIDER (DIR/SCR Alma Leiva. HONDURAS. 2014. TRT 03 min. 54 sec). CAT: Animation
An investigation and reinterpretation of San Pedro Sula, Honduras, where I grew up in the 1970's and 1980's, now sadly known as "the murder capital of the world" since 2011. The animated map reconfigures the city's current geography as a "survival guide" for outsiders and tourists, indicating what areas are off-limits to them depending on available data and information. (New York City premiere).
PING PONG (DIR/SCR Franck Boulègue & Marisa C. Hayes. SPAIN/FRANCE. 2014. TRT 02'07"). CAT: Experimental Photo/Stop Motion
Created using hundreds of still photos and stop-motion animation. Inspired by Norman McLaren's work. Ping Pong explores absence/presence and the traces left by a body's interaction with architecture. Camera movements create choreography as the dancer ios photographed, inviting the viewer to think of the image as an expanded choreography.
THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS 3 (Night Stroll) (DIR/SCR Alma Leiva. HONDURAS. 2014. TRT 02'57"). CAT: Experimental Video Art
The third in a series of found-footage manipulated videos that borrow from historical, television and surveillance material shows two brothers' "night stroll" in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, before armed men ambush and execute them. This video loop attempts to create a disjointed, open-ended tale of violence in Honduras. The manipulated visual clues and disturbing sound effects force viewers to make their own interpretations based on the work's psychological impact rather than the graphic, direct account of the actual violent act.
MALACRIANZA (DIR/SCR Arturo Menéndez. EL SALVADOR. 2014. TRT 68 min,). CAT: Fiction.
A humble piñata salesman in San Salvador, don Cleo, one day receives an extortion note demanding $500 USD, which he must get within 72 hours. Obligated but without the means, he decides to face the "supposed extortionists." Malacrianza premiered at the AFI 2014 Latin American Film Festival (Washington DC) and Festival del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano de La Habana, Cuba. In October of this year 2015 it held its national premiere in El Salvador. (New York premiere. In Spanish with English subtitles)
