Z -- PROGRAM 2: Bronx World Film Cycle, Winter 2015
LAMADU QABU
(SCR/DIR Emma Gauthier, USA, 2015, TRT 1'58.") CAT: Experimental animation

Darwin's Theory of Evolution is widely accepted as the process by which all living things arrived at their current incarnation -- including human beings. While we understand scientifically how homo sapiens evolved biologically, we don't understand when our unique human consciousness began to take form; when we began recognizing our world aesthetically; when language first failed to express abstract thoughts. Lamadu Qabu is a small origin story of wonder, frustration, and the beginnings of art.

FOR YOU
(SCR Jeta Betjullahu and Daniel Diosdado. DIR Daniel Diosdado, SPAIN/USA, 2015, 4'47"), CAT: Dramatic poem.

This short art film shows four artists depicting the lengths they all go to just to create. Each enacts a verse from a poem depicting mental distress, artistic determination and the psychological state of overcoming an artistic block expressed through physical pain. They continue to create as the pain level rises. Artists will fade away, however we all hope the collective experience of art and ART itself can transcend time and be passed on. (In English with Spanish subtitles)

CONVERSATIONS FROM THE OTHER SIDE (DIR/SCR Alma Leiva. HOND, 2014. TRT 4:57). CAT: Experimental documentary

LIBERATING A PRISON (SCR/DIR Guillermo Vallecillo, HOND, 2014, TRT 25 min.) CAT: Documentary, originally produced for Al Jazeera

Gripped by violence and insecurity, brutality stains the streets of Honduras's cities. Communities live in fear, neighbourhoods fortify themselves behind high walls and inside barbed-wired homes, and families flee to the US seeeking opportunities. In the chaos, Denis BerrĂos and other artists from Colectivo Hormiga create domains of security and free expression. To raise a weary public's interest they symbolically "liberate" an abandoned penitentiary. (In Spanish with English subtitles. Originally broadcast over Al Jazeera)

CUATRO PUNTOS CARDINALES (DIR/SCR Javier Kafie. EL SALVADOR. 2014. TRT 54'43"). CAT: Documentary

Four Cardinal Points brings together four inspiring stories from North, South, East and West El Salvador. With a soft poetic veil, these stories portray a rich cultural, ecological and social diversity, showing a viewpoint of the country that distances itself from the accounts of violence that prevail in the Central American region. (New York premiere. In Spanish with English subtitles.)
